Intermittent Fasting

Definition: Intermittent fasting (IF) is a pattern of eating that alternates between periods of fasting (usually meaning consumption of water only) and non-fasting.

True to Wikipedia's definition, Intermittent Fasting is simply a way of eating that dictates one to fast periodically to achieve fat loss, muscle gain (if accompanied with proper exercise) and an overall better health. Most of us have had problems with weight or pesky fat hanging off unsightly areas. Most of us have also tried various methods of losing weight, from Pilates to those magic ab-rollers to hundreds of reps of desperate sit-ups. Most... didn't work.

Something went wrong somewhere. An overload of information, false facts, lack of willpower, and so on. I was on that boat. But ever since trying intermittent fasting, I've seen easy, simple results. Easy, because it's fasting. No pesky calorie limits, no weighing and restricting carbs, just simply... not eating.

Wait. Don't stop. It's not about torturing yourself, it's about improving yourself -- it gets better, I promise.

Starvation Mode: A Myth

But if it is about not eating, how does intermittent fasting and weight loss correlate? Doesn't not eating starve your body out and promotes starvation mode? Simply put: no. It's a myth. There has been no biological evidence nor studies that actually show evidence in supporting the starvation mode myth. Actual starvation means cutting the total caloric intake to less than 50% of what the body requires per day for an extended period of time. And by extended we mean weeks. Months.

So relax, simply skipping your breakfast won't put your body in a permanent calorie hogging mode. In fact, studies show that you can eat within a restricted calorie limit without impacting your metabolism at all.

Intermittent Fasting for Weight Loss: How To

While each individual's needs may differ, there are two basic options to start your journey in weight loss through intermittent fasting:

Daily fasting: The time of fasting varies between 15 to 19 hours. As the name suggests, it's done everyday and only gives a small window for eating meals between fasts. As an example, a 15 hour fast will give the individual 9 hours to eat their meals before resuming their fast again.

1-3x a week: This means an 18-24 hour fast a few times a week -- translating to a full day without eating.

Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Besides weight loss? Short-term fasting has shown to:
  • Keep the metabolism strong.
  • Lower inflammation and blood pressure, increase protection against neuro-degenerative diseases.
  • Increase life-span as shown in a study conducted on monkeys. Data on what they would do to a human's life-span have not yet been concluded, but hey, monkeys. Anything that shares 98% of our DNA is good enough.
  • Increase human growth hormones.
  • Increase fatty acid oxidation (which means fat and weight loss).
  • Maintenance of skeletal muscle mass.
  • Increased norepinephrine & epinephrine levels (which translates to increased energy and alertness).
