International Environmental Court

Ranked #22,774 in Culture & Society, #468,625 overall

We are all effected by damage and destruction to the only environment we have

The current oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a reminder to everybody that more care must be taken to protect our ecco system from any more damage. This Lens sets out to make the case for a new International Court for the Environment

Weak Governments and corruption play a major part

Thank goodness America has a strong President and will make BP pay what it costs to clear the mess up. But there are many other places in the world where oil is polluting the seas, rivers and oceans and nobody is held responsible. There is much more to environmental damage than just oil pollution. Deforestation, over fishing, carbon emissions and many others that degrade the living world.

If weak governments, and corruption are involved, the details are just covered up, but the damage still goes on, and we all suffer or the next generations will.

The Global Community needs an International Court of last resort

International Environmental Court

We all know, or have heard how strong the lobbyists are for their particular customer or industry. Often they have unlimited funds to promote their views or persuades governments or government employees to follow a certain course of action. But who is defending our planet Earth?

This is where a court, specifically for environmental damage, pollution, excess logging, not following international agreements, diverting existing water flows, air pollution and many other types of destruction etc, should be established.

People and countries always put themselves first. The Court would put the global environment first.

Do you think a Court would be useful?

How the idea might work

Lawyers can be very expensive, normal courts can delay due process for any number of reasons, intimidation can be a major problem in poorer countries.

So if a number of people from a minimum number of countries submitted court application, the court would then have the power to start proceedings. An example. A major oil spill in a country with poor legal processes, corruption, weak government could be taken to the International Environmental Court by 5,000 people registering from a least 3 other countries. Would you support this idea?
