Previous locations 18th Fair

Hamptworth

Hamptworth is situated on the northern edge of the New Forest National Park, half way between Southampton and Salisbury on the Wiltshire / Hampshire border. Just 3 minutes from the A36 Southampton to Salisbury road.
The estate which comprises 3,000 acres of glorious parkland, gardens and woodland has been home to the Anderson family for just over 200 years and still remains in private ownership today.

Hamptworth Lodge, the jewel in the crown at the centre of the estate is a magnificent Jacobean style manor house

Kingston Maurward

Kingston Maurward is situated near Dorchester and houses Kingston Maurward College, specialising in land based and agricultural subjects.

The house was originally built in the early 1700s for the Prime Minister's cousin George Pitt and his wife Laura Grey, whose family had owned the estate for many generations - living in the nearby Elizabethan Manor House.

Thomas Hardy was a frequent visitor as a boy and later referred to Kingston Maurward House as 'Knapwater House' in his novel Desperate Remedies.

Military encampments

Previous fairs have featured several Military re-enactments and living history encampments.
There were drill demonstrations and weapon displays and a chance to experience what camp life was like during the Napoleonic period.

Visitors could wander through the Camps of Napoleon's and Wellington's soldiers throughout the day, chatting with the soldiers and civilians, experiencing the sights and sounds and the smells!

The Napoleonic Association

The Napoleonic Association is Britains largest Napoleonic re-encatment group.
Members of the NA have attended previous Fairs, either as individuals or as part of military units.
They have both British and French regiments and aim to portray the military living, tactics and battles of the period.
They also have research and and gaming groups.

The Association's British and French Infantry, Artillery and mounted Cavalry are ably supported by camp followers (the women and children of the armies) who give a very accurate portrayal of life, day and night under the canvas of a military encampment. Our living history encampments are enhanced by battle re-enactments and skill at arms tournaments which demonstrate the uniforms, weapons and precision drill of this most colourful and dramatic period of history.

HistoryHorse

HistoryHorse provided a mounted display, depicting the role of a Napoleonic trooper.

King's German Artillery

Part of the King's German Legion, the King's German Artillery provided fire suppport for the Allied Army.

The origins of the Kings German Legion stem back to the invasion and occupation of the Electorate of Hanover by France in July 1803. The ruler of Hanover was none other than King George III of England. Although forbidden by Napoleon to take up arms against France, men from the Hanovarian army soon began to come to England, to serve their Ruler, and free their land from French rule.

43rd Monmouthshire Light Infantry

The 43rd Monmouthshire Light Infantry aims to to demonstrate the tactics and techniques employed in combat at the time, or the use of weapons. It is a way of making history solid. We also employ living history to paint a picture of life in barracks or on campaign, using displays and demonstrations to show the public cooking, drill, music, duties and general life.

The 43rd is part of the Napoleonic association.

Civilian activities

It wasn't just military stuff on display. There have been singers and dancers and musicians and other such merrymaking.
Some of these activities were put on as displays, others encouraged the public to join in and have some fun.

Childrens activities

Painting and drawing were on offer to keep the younger visitors entertained.
For those a little older, and some parents, sword schools were running. Wooden swords were provided as the metal ones tend to leave bruises.

Traders

There were be lots of period and modern traders.

Why didn't I find out about this earlier, sounds great fun and Kingston Maurwood's close enough for me to have bribed my parents to take me. I've favourited the lens so I can come back when the location of 2011 event is added, but the date sounds like roughly the time I'd be expected back at uni.
