International Pancake Day

There are two towns who surely know how to celebrate International Pancake Day. The towns have fun and games for the family, but the main attraction is the Pancake Day Race.

The race began in 1445 when a woman in Olney, England was so busy making pancakes that she realized she was going to be late for church so she ran out of the house and to church skillet in hand and apron still on. This was the beginning of a new tradition. Women began racing to the church holding skillets to win the "Kiss of Peace" from the church bell ringer.

In 1950 Liberal joined in after the Liberal Jaycee President R.J. Leete contacted the Rev. Ronald Collins, Vicar of St. Peter and St. Paul's church in Olney and challenged him to a race. The women of Olney against the women of Liberal.

During the race the women must carry a pancake in a skillet and flip it at the beginning and end of the race. They also must wear an apron and a head scarf. The winning prize is still a kiss. And don't forget bragging rights.
