Design 

Yahoo! Personals keeps the design and functionality of the website rather simple compared to other personals services out there. When you are registering for a profile, you'll be asked various questions to describe yourself. This personality test is used to help Yahoo! Personals find you matches. You'll fill out those questions using multiple choice and dropdown menus. However, if you just want to straight to meeting people, you can skip these questions. As for your profile, there's not anything too special about it; you can upload up to 5 photos to your profile.

There is one thing I like about Yahoo! Personals that makes it unique however: It allows you to look at the complete profiles of other members, even if you're still on a free trial. Being allowed to view their full profiles is a great way to see if the people on the website are your type.

Communication 

When it comes to the methods of communication, Yahoo! Personals doesn't deliver anything beyond the basics. If you want to deliver an expression of interest, called "icebreakers," you can do so even as a trial member. However, if you want to converse with someone, you'll have to subscribe for a membership. But once you subscribe, you'll be allowed to use e-mail or instant messaging.


There is also another level of membership, which is the Premier membership. It doesn't offer much above the first level except an advanced matchmaking system and the ability to be able to view other premier member's profiles. However, if you're expecting to go in a serious relationship, then it would be best to upgrade to a premier membership to find other people that are just as serious. (Why would people who are fooling around want to play extra? So expect to find serious daters only).

As I said, Yahoo! Personal's communication is simple. Besides those few points, it doesn't offer anything else. There are no chat rooms, no video, no voice introductions, etc.

While Yahoo! Personal's design and communication are simple, one thing that makes it stand out is the search engine...

Search Engine 

Yahoo! Personals features a very comprehensive search engine that makes your search quick and efficient. It will allow you to search for as many criteria as you want. Their search engine still has the basic search criteria that many other online dating services have such as location, with or without photos, last login, etc. But the one thing that makes it so powerful is that you can perform keyword searches. Just like Yahoo!'s search engine, you can now search for keywords in people's profile in the same manner. So if you're looking for people with similar interests, you'll be able to find them easily.

My Final Word 

Overall, I wasn't too impressed by Yahoo! Personals. Their pricing structure is slightly less than websites that offer more features (fees are below). The only things that stand out are the search engine and the popularity of Yahoo! Personals. It can maintain a large membership due to the fact that anyone that uses Yahoo! will know about the personals. I recommend this website if you're part of a young crowd between the ages of 21-40. You'll have a large pool of people to choose from, which is great, as long as you're fine with not having too many features.
