Moving The FREE Line in Internet Marketing

Ranked #50,339 in Business & Work, #575,401 overall

"Moving the FREE Line"

"Moving the free line" was perhaps first coined in the internet marketing industry but it is not a concept new to business. The age of the internet has flat lined the world by making so much available to us for free. We can read books, share books, watch videos, tv and movies and even create our own, develop websites and generate leads and even use the phone via skype ALL for free!

People have become so accustomed to this free access that businesses and marketers recognize that in order to remain competitive they need to have huge value offerings for free. Moving the free line means that to remain competitive you will have to be prepared to move the demarcation line in your sales funnel of what you would have once charged for to give it away for free to keep and grow your market share of customers before your competitors do.

Sales Funnel: Competition is Moving the FREE Line

sales funnel

The sales funnel is an important part of any business. It is a map of how you get people into relationship with you so that you can build trust and a long term commitment to each others success. The customer tells you what it needs and wants and you provide solutions to their problems through different product offerings in your sales funnel.

How you market your offerings is the strategy you use to attract prospects into your sales funnel. You want your prospects to take action to start the relationship with you and your business. As mentioned above, with the onslaught of free access to information and services on the internet, business today has to have a high value offering that they are prepared to give away for free on the front end. The free line is the line in the funnel that divides the free offering from the paid products Research shows that the more you can give away for free that your competitors are charging for, the more sales you will make in the back end. By offering huge value up front, the trust relationship between the client and the business deepens. This is what is called moving the free line.

It is called a sales funnel as the marketing strategies and product offerings are laid out in a manner that visually resembles a funnel. The top of the funnel is where the more general product or service will appeal to a lot more people. That is where you would add your free offer. People will enter the funnel and hopefully come back for more of your stuff as they start to rely on and trust what you can do for them. Once they are in your funnel it will be easier for you to interact with them building a relationship and converting more of them into paying customers. The further along the funnel people move, the more specialized higher end products you will be able to offer them as they will be very receptive to what you can do to help them out.

Social Media and The FREE Line

Brand Awareness

Web 2.0 and social media have made it easy for marketers and small business people to build huge brand awareness with very little financial investment because of its free access. When you think of it some have managed to do it in a very short period of time relatively speaking.

Social platforms like Myspace, Facebook, Youtube, Squidoo,Twitter, WP, to name a few have made it easy for people to create and offer free content to a huge very targeted market. As more and more people are using the internet to research and make purchases, the more skilled marketers are at using these tools to get themselves known, the easier it will be for them to be able to compete with those who have deep pockets and large teams.

Creating a community of followers on these platforms based on relationships of interactions and being transparent about who you are had transformed how some businesses are doing business. Those that have made themselves accessible are those that stand out as trustworthy. They get themselves branded. I heard from Jason falls speak the other day and he was saying that social media branding is different from what traditional PR branding specialists think. Your brand has nothing about what you think you are doing or are but what people perceive you to be. The power of social media as demonstrated in this Youtube video can quickly gain control of an audience. Dave Carroll became a worldwide phenomena when he loaded a song about his disastrous interactions with United Airlines.

I am sure you can imagine what the impact of this video had on the bottom line for United Airlines. Dave was downloaded millions of times. He was interviewed in the news media including journals, radio and television. He actually created a trilogy of songs on this experience. His audience was greatly impacted by this decision to write a song of protest. He could never have paid for that kind of brand marketing.
If you watch his series of videos on Youtube you will see a link pop up that offers a FREE mp3 download and brings you to a lead capture page to get it. The series brought huge value to disgruntled customers as well as any PR firm studying the to dos and don'ts of customer service. Music lovers had entertaining fun music to listen to all for free.
Dave Carroll had to compose and write the music, practice with his band, and gather a group of people together to make the video. This was his upfront investment. It appears that it has paid off hugely. He has millions of new listeners and is touring around the world.

I think we have become so used to getting so much for free, that it is hard sometimes to define what one can actually charge for. It can be a challenging path to maneuver.

I was thinking about this today in regards to community building...and people helping friends and neighbours out....you do it to help. The offshoot of this are tight knit communities. In the online world of social media the first thing that attracted me to it was the conversations people were having about community. I have received so much help and offered so much for free that I know I end up purchasing from those that have helped me the most. Some of them I believe I will even meet face to face one day. for those that I have not purchased from I have freely sent them referrals for those I know would benefit from them.
I do think it is important to take theses things into consideration when building online or offline for that matter.

I think that as marketers I think it is a big responsibility to educate with the best information possible so people are well informed to find and make the best decisions for their problems.
