The Best Internet Marketing Strategies

Bookmark and Share

There are endless suggestions on the web and in books about all the various techniques, sites, and products that can promote your business, services, and products.

But face it, internet marketers are a busy group of people and time is precious. Wouldn't it be great if we could discover internet marketing that works based on experience before we put in months worth of time?

Rather than a list of what to try, you can help develop a list of what internet marketing works by completing this 7 question survey. Stick around for the Discussion Items and things will be even better. It will allow you to share your recommendations, your advice on what's not working, and to learn from the experience of others as well.

A Few Brief Words About the Survey

What are the BEST internet marketing strategies?

Your participation is appreciated! We don't want this to simply be a list of the services and strategies available or the ones you've tried. We want it to be a barometer of what works best when you have limited time. So, here are a few things to know:

  • You don't have to vote on every item; only the ones you know well and feel somewhat strongly about.

  • If you're neutral on an item don't vote for it. If you haven't tried something don't vote for it.

  • If you feel an item is well worth your time, vote it up.

  • Don't be afraid to vote an item down. If it wasn't worth your time indicate that with a down vote. We want the best and most productive things to rise to the top.

  • All participants and readers understand that the effectiveness of any technique or service can be dependent upon how it's used or implemented, the given niche, etc. This survey just provides an idea of the experiences of other internet marketers.

  • This is not a scientific survey, it is only an informal tool for learning more about what other internet marketers find useful.
  • Remember: Vote only on items you feel strongly about. These are priorities.

Best Internet Marketing Strategies: Question 1

Which of the following marketing activities are most useful to you?

Let's start with the basics, remember only let us know the most (vote up) and the least (vote down) effective. You can add your own too, then vote appropriately for that item.

After this survey there are several discussion items for you to explain any votes for or against a particular strategy. Please add your comments there!

    Discussion about Blogging

If you voted Blogging up or down, tell us why

What's Good or Bad About Blogging?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

    Pros

    hesika says:

Blogging is a very good opportunity to tell the customer/visitor about your site. I use the blogs also for additional information and it is always possible to link to your own site and other blogs, so that the way goes arround. The people get more possibilites to find you.

    johndilbeck says:

Blogging is relatively easy, as compared to building good websites, and the content you add can be syndicated easily on a variety of other sites via RSS. Add subscribing to new blog posts via email and it's easy to post in one place and have your content show up in lots of other places, including someone's email inbox. Do it right, and it brings in more readers and reminds existing subscribers that you are writing about something in which they are interested.

    Rock_The_Ice says:

I do a lot of blogging because it gets you good backlinks, is easy to establish a readership and can drive a lot of traffic to your lenses.

    mulberry says:

I like blogging, it's not terribly time consuming and you can reach a fairly targeted audience. You can also get a huge number of text links/backlinks fairly quickly. It can be quite viral. It can also help you establish authority.

    Cons

    TeaLady says:

    It's so addicting!

What's Good or Bad About Forum Participation?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

    Pros

    hesika says:

A forum is always a good idea to "leave your marks" in the internet. There are a lot of people, who goes on your site. If you use related forums you get some targeted traffic.

    Jimmie says:

Someone asks a question, and you answer it with a lens. Perfect. You're happy. They're happy. Win Win.

    johndilbeck says:

I agree with what mulberry says about forum participation. I'd like to add that it can take some time to find a forum that is a good fit with both your personality and interests. When you find the right fit, participating in forum discussions can help you make new friends, learn new things, and share what you know. It takes time and effort, but it can pay off in the long run.

    mulberry says:

This is another favorite. You reach a highly targeted audience looking for what you offer (great conversion). It can be fairly time consuming at first but not too bad over time. Just be careful not to "spam" or include links where they aren't wanted!

    Cons

    spirituality says:

Time consuming. I usually find my interest in any given forum dies down pretty quickly. Have to keep reminding myself to get in there and join the conversation.

    Discussion about Article Writing

If you voted Article Writing up or down, tell us why

What's Good or Bad About Article Writing?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

    Pros

    hesika says:

Article writing is the same as blogging. The best is, if you can find anyone, who writes an article about your site/topic. Then you have arguments of another person about your site. That's like a review and works as well. A good way for targeted traffic.

    Cons

    spirituality says:

Writing articles for other websites can drive attention away from your own. It can also lead to 'duplicate content': google finding that other site instead of your own.

I'd say: only submit articles to sites that are real authorities in their field.

    Discussion about Social Marketing/Bookmarking

If you voted Social Marketing up or down, tell us why

What is Good or Bad about Social Marketing/Bookmarking?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

    Pros

    hesika says:

There are two ways to use Social Marketing/Bookmarking. At first you get good backlinks to your site and have often the possibility to comment the sites. Second you get targeted traffic there from. Third you can learn a lot from other users.

    johndilbeck says:

Social networking and bookmarking are good at building links, growing relationships, and adding new strands in the web of information that lead back to you and what you promote. This is not a fast cure-all for attracting visitors to your sites, but it is a good long-term strategy for attracting more readers to what you have to say.

    Cons

    spirituality says:

The links usually don't count for search engines, so it only works if your social brand can handle promoting your stuff.

    scrapperkare says:

From my experience on Facebook, limited as it may be, the social networking sites are great for cultivating personal relationships, but I don't find it conducive to marketing your business. Maybe it's because most of my friends there don't share my business interests, I don't know. I noticed that in the voting module #1 above that Social Marketing was #6 (as of 11.13.08)--about in the middle, tho' it's score is just at 2 points.

Or maybe I'm not using Facebook in a way that could work for me as a marketing tool . . . am willing to be persuaded otherwise!

    Discussion about Directories

If you voted Directories up or down, tell us why

What's Good or Bad about using Directories?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

    Pros

    hesika says:

Using Directories brings good links to your site. That was the first, what I did and it brought my sites up with google. I submitted our sites in hundreds of Directories all over the world.

    Cons

    spirituality says:

It can be a time waster as many directories will not bring you the quality links that will help you with google - nor will they bring in direct traffic. Some approve links very slowly as well.

What's Good or Bad about using Classified Advertising?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

    Pros

    Cons

    spirituality says:

Costs money. You have to know what you're doing to get good returns on your dollars.

    hesika says:

It did not bring me a lot. There was not link, the once good: I told among thousands of other Classified Ads about our topic. I did it once to try and I will not repeat it.

What is Good or Bad about Reciprocal Linking?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

    Pros

    Cons

    hesika says:

Our sites are free of advertisings or any other links. That's the reason, why we work without Reciprocal Linking. I don't like sites, which are full of links to other sites...

    spirituality says:

If you do too much reciprocal linking, your link profile will look artificial and google may punish you for it...

    Discussion about Traffic Exchanges

If you voted Traffic Exchanges up or down, tell us why

What's Good or Bad about Traffic Exchanges?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

    Pros

    hesika says:

I used for a while LinkReferal for our websites. It brought me every day about 20 visitors, more important: I received reviews from other users and I had to write in the forum. So I learned a lot - and I had visitors, wich pushed my sites up by visiting them. Of course I did the same for the others and so it was a win-win situation. Even today without being activ there I receive traffic from there.

    johndilbeck says:

It depends upon what you are promoting. If you are marketing services and products that help people bring more traffic to their sites, or to easily reconnect with visitors, then traffic exchanges can be very effective. If you are showing sales pages, blogs, and other long, slow-loading pages, they just won't work. People surf traffic exchanges to bring more visitors to their sites and they can be very effective when you learn how to use them properly. One of the best ways to promote in the traffic exchanges is to use squeeze pages to capture email leads for your newsletters and mailing lists. Then, you have multiple opportunities to build the relationship, educate your subscribers, and eventually convert some of them into customers.

    Cons

    scrapperkare says:

I've used Linkreferral and agree with hesika on the Pro side that they can be beneficial in some ways. I think it could help you if you have a new website & need some constructive criticism (some there will give it--I always did). But I'd say overall it's time-consuming to keep up with each day and I found that since my sites are focused on a specific interest, not general interest to the public, it's not the best use of my marketing time.

    mulberry says:

I've never used these for Squidoo lenses but used them for awhile a long time ago. Pretty time consuming and poor conversion. Very, very few visitors are interested in your content, products, or services. Didn't work for me at all.

    Discussion about Microblogging

If you voted Microblogging up or down, tell us why

What's Good or Bad about Microblogging?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

    Pros

    spirituality says:

It's a way to reach out the the bloggers - which is a great crowd to get in with if you're succesful. It also works as another way to get people on squidoo to notice your lenses and perhaps vote on them.

    hesika says:

I useTwitter. It is good for leaving links in the web and Twitter is good to tell your followers about changes in your site/blog or something other news in the web. I did not get traffic from there, but it is link-building.

    johndilbeck says:

I like Twitter because it makes it easy for me to keep up with what my friends and colleagues are doing. I follow lots of bloggers and Squidoo lensmasters and I like being notified when they post something new to their blog or create a new lens (or update one).

Frequently, I've been able to view a lens or read a blog post within seconds of it being published.

Plus, the tweets (or twitters) are short and easy to skip over if they aren't interesting or relevant to me at the time.

    Cons

    spirituality says:

Twitter IS NOT link building: those links don't count for the search engines (especially google). So if you don't get traffic from there, you are wasting your time (or have to try doing it differently).

Discussion about List Building and E-mail Marketing

If you voted List Building up or down, tell us why

What is Good or Bad about List Building and E-mail Marketing

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

    Pros

    scrapperkare says:

I've been using ConstantContact.com for my e-newsletter list for a ScriptureTableware.com business and am averaging from 40-50% opens. The e-newsletter list for my ScrappinRetreats.com business is on a system that doesn't give me the reporting that Constant Contact does, but my guess is that it's opened by at least that same percentage, if not more, judging from hits to my website just following each email blast.

I think list-building is essential to any internet marketer's plan.

    spirituality says:

Keeps your core group of fans informed on what you do in a certain niche. Very valuable. But do keep it useful to THEM. You don't want to annoy your fans.

    Cons

    hesika says:

I tryed it and it is not worth. The most E-Mails go in the spam-folder and never are read. If you don't know the recipients, which gave you their e-mail address, because they like to know about news on your site, it is not good to use.

    Discussion about Building Authority Pages

If you voted Building Authority Pages up or down, tell us why

What is Good or Bad about Building Authority Pages?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

    Pros

    hesika says:

There are some in the net. Here you tell your visitors about your business and you show your knowledges. You can leave your links and when it is interesting, what you have to say, you get traffic.

    spirituality says:

Depends on the site: but it can drive traffic and be a place to get quality links from.

    Cons

    spirituality says:

Wikipedia, Knol and hubpages don't have followed links: they don't count towards your other webprojects online link profile.

Bad about wikipedia is that the article isn't even yours: someone may well decide that the link you put there pointing to your website or lens does not belong.

    spirituality says:

It can lead to less traffic for your own site if it's too successful. Other than that - no cons that I can see.
