Internet Success: Beyond Squidoo

Perhaps you're new on the internet and have just started creating content on line as a way of promoting yourself, your products, services, or ideas. On the other hand, you could be someone who has already created a lot of articles or even lenses here on Squidoo. You may be wondering why you would want to write elsewhere. If you're new, it seems overwhelming to do anything more than what you're currently doing. Or if you've been around a while and are having success on Squidoo, why would you change the formula?

Whether you have your own business, are an affiliate marketer, or just someone trying to make a go of it by blogging and writing, creating unique and useful content is still what will get you where you want to go. The question here is, why do that anywhere else? Well, let me give you some internet marketing tips that will explain...

Those Backlinks

You hear it all of the time. If you have a website, a blog, or a webpage anywhere, you want quality backlinks to that page or site so that it rises to the top in searches. If another site or page links back to yours, it's seen as a vote of confidence. It gives your page or site "authority" in the eyes of the search engines. It's best if that website or webpage is focused on a similar topic and even better if that page or site has a high page rank.

Now getting those backlinks takes time and effort. The easiest way to get them is to create more pages, more sites, and more blogs where you can create your own backlinks. That's right, you want to create your own dynasty. You want to own as much real estate as possible. Then stack the deck a bit by linking between those pages. You don't want to over do it, but you do need to do it to some extent!

More Domains

My second internet marketing tip is that the most effective backlinks come from more than one domain. If you have hundreds of Squidoo lenses and you link between them that's fine and dandy, but it will be even more useful to get backlinks coming in from other domains.

Again this can boost your authority in the eyes of search engines. A word of caution however. If you create content on writing sites, you need to be sure you know the rules so that you're working within their guidelines. For instance, a site may allow you to include only one, or two, or perhaps three backlinks per article or per page. Or perhaps they have rules related to where those backlinks occur. Of course, you also want to be sure you know which links will be "do follow" and which will be "nofollow". You want "do follow" links so that search engines will recognize your importance but "nofollow" links can still assist in driving traffic.

Increased Visibility

It's just like a single person searching for a mate. If you don't get out there, you aren't likely to meet anyone. If you just spend your Saturday nights going to the same spot week after week, you won't be exposing yourself to many new people. The same is true in internet marketing.

If all of your content is in the same spot, you may be missing a huge audience. You need to spread yourself around and get more eyes on what you're doing. By writing on a variety of sites, more people are bound to see your content and potentially buy something, begin following you, or spread the word about you.

You'll build authority as well as traffic in this way.

Additional Streams of Income

My next internet marketing tip is about what success really looks like. Success on the internet for some individuals may come in the form of a single source of revenue. We all dream of this happening. But, the reality is, for many of us, our fortunes are made up of multiple sources of income that by themselves are insufficient. Added together however, they make up a decent living.

While a single site, such as Squidoo, may be the meat and potatoes of your online existence, more success is out there waiting if you're willing to expand and begin making the most of what you know. Every site has it's strengths. Learn what type of content works where, and dive in.

Insurance

It may not be imaginable that a site like Squidoo or another content site that is your darling would ever discontinue operations or, heaven forbid, ban you for some reason. However, it is a possible scenario. Therefore, not placing all of your eggs in one basket is prudent if the living you are earning is of any value to you.

Certainly backing up all of your content for safe keeping is a good first step, but face it, if you move that content, the URL changes and it would take time to recapture the same traffic. The other tactic is to assure that you have those other sites lined up to continue bringing in an income even if something horrendous happens in one spot. Remember, most of these sites aren't paid, they are a free service, and they can do what they like.

Increasing Your Network

My final internet marketing tip is about how having a presence on multiple sites is not only good for generating traffic from a wider audience, but it's also good for developing a broader network of friends.

Friends are great for mutual support, for backlinking, for building traffic, and more. Adding friends on one site, often transfers to more friends elsewhere. A friend added on one site often results in them seeking us out elsewhere and boosting our popularity there as well. Once you add them as a friend on any given site, it's easier to meet their other friends, so on and so forth. It's viral.

So Where Should You Write?

Where you write depends on your topic or niche, your goals, and your style. There is an ever increasing pool of sites out there where you can add content, many of them free or for a nominal fee.

Certainly there are article directories which will happily allow you to add content that is unique and useful. Most of these allow you to include links within your author bio at the end of your article. These articles can then be picked up and published by other sites. Your content is syndicated but you should get those backlinks posted around the web as publishers use your articles. Ezinearticles.com and goarticles.com are just two examples. Many of these sites however, provide you with no additional income directly. Indirectly, those articles may receive traffic that clicks through to your pages, and then subsequently make a purchase.

Sites such as Qondio.com and Bukisa allow you to also earn adsense revenue and provide some "do follow" (as well as "nofollow") links. You can also earn revenue from referrals. Certainly there are many other popular options such as Associated Content, Helium, Gather, and e-How.

Google Knol is another choice and certainly Hubpages is a place you'll find many familiar Squidoo lensmaster faces. A hub is much like a Squidoo lens, and allows you to earn a bit of AdSense revenue as well as affiliate income from e-Bay or Amazon. Meanwhile you can build a few backlinks to your Squidoo lenses.
