Explanation: Internet Merchant Accounts

Internet Merchant Accounts may seem like they are a whole other language. They might seem complex and obscure and very hard to figure out. You know you need one in order to process credit card payments and make money, but how do you know which one you need. Providers can offer all kinds of services and products, promises and guarantees... but what does it all mean? A merchant account is a bank account; but more than that it is a contractual agreement between you the merchant, the merchant account provider that is the bank your merchant account is supplied through, and the payment processing agent or payment gateway.

Explanation: Internet Merchant Accounts

Internet Merchant Accounts may seem like they are a whole other language. They might seem complex and obscure and very hard to figure out.

You know you need one in order to process credit card payments and make money, but how do you know which one you need. Providers can offer all kinds of services and products, promises and guarantees%u2026 but what does it all mean? A merchant account is a bank account; but more than that it is a contractual agreement between you the merchant, the merchant account provider that is the bank your merchant account is supplied through, and the payment processing agent or payment gateway.

So, you are the beginning of the payment processing trail. The customer comes to your site and finds a product or service that he likes, clicks the "add to cart" button and then proceeds to pay via his favorite online shopping credit card. This is where the payment journey begins. The information passes through your site and to the merchant bank account provider's website. At the merchant bank website, the information is verified for purposes of fraud prevention, such as with CCV (Credit Card Verification) and Address verification. It is then forwarded to the payment gateway. The payment gateway is responsible for making sure that the funds are available from the customer's account, they authorize payment and then send the information back to the merchant bank. From there your money gets placed into your account (with any fees already removed) and then you have access to it.
For the wary internet shopper, there are many alternatives to directly paying by credit card such as e-check, digital wallets and payment services like Paypal. It is a smart customer who will be fearful of card fraud and identity theft, and it will be a smart business owner who will provide the necessary alternatives to keep their customers happily shopping their store.
Look into all the information before settling on a merchant account provider. Asses your business needs and the needs of your customers. Follow this great advice and you'll grow your business with confidence.
