Free Internet Radio

You may not already know this but I'm a big fan of music. I have to have my music no matter where I am. I listen to it at my house, in the car and at the office. I do have my own MP3 collection but I get tired of listening to them because it is the same music playing over and over. I don't like listening to local radio stations because it doesn't play the types of music that I like. So what do I do? I go online and listen to free online radio stations.

Isn't the Internet great? It used to be that this kind of thing was not possible but now, there are probably more online radio stations than there are hairs on your head (just an exaggeration of course). What's even better is that almost all of these radio stations are free for us to access. You only have to pay if you want higher quality audio and since my Internet connection cannot handle that much bandwidth, I'm happy with lower bit rates. It still sounds great at lower bit rates. Take my word for it.

There are three ways to access these radio stations: through a web browser, media players such as Windows Media Player and Internet Radio players. Allow me to explain each method in detail.

Web Browser Method

This is the easiest method because all you'll have to do is to go to a radio station website and choose a radio station. It is that easy. There is just one thing I have to mention. I have only tried this with Internet Explorer. I can't confirm that it works with other browsers but I'm sure it does.
  1. Fire up your web browser and go to the homepage of the radio station. For starters, you can try Live365, SHOUTcast or SKY.FM.

  2. Next, make a selection. Choose a genre from the first tab or try the other tabs (most popular, featured or recommendations).

  3. The next page that will load will depend on your selection. In this example, I selected the "Jazz" genre which loaded the page below. From here, just choose a radio station.

  4. Once you click on a radio station link, this is what it will look like when it loads.

  5. That's it for the web browser method!

Media Player Method

This one is also easy to follow because the player is already available (Windows). I will be using Windows Media Player (Windows 7) in this illustration.
  1. Load Windows Media Player. If the Windows Media Guide doesn't show up immediately, click on the "Media Guide" link at the bar on the left side and the page should load after that.

  2. Select the "Internet Radio" link.

  3. The next page that loads will give you the options of either choosing a genre or searching for a radio station. Make your selection here.

  4. You will be presented with available online radio stations to choose from. Just click on the "Listen" link associated with a station you like and let it load.

  5. That's it for the media player method.

“The next one is my favorite. I recommend using this one.”

Web Radio Widget

Ok, so what is this widget? Well, Web Radio is an Internet radio player widget for Yahoo! Widgets. It doesn't play media files or do anything else. It just plays radio stations but it's good at that. It loads with Windows (just as long as Yahoo! Widgets is configured to load at start-up) and stays on your desktop at the back of all other windows so it doesn't get in the way. It doesn't add itself to the taskbar and can even be totally hidden from view. It's just great.

Now you might be asking why on earth is Troy using Yahoo! Widgets if he already has the Sidebar that comes with Windows 7. My answer to that is that some habits are just too hard to break.
  1. First, you need to already have the link to an online radio station. Just do a search for it, I'm sure you'll find some. Anyway, I'm going to include a few that I'm using myself somewhere below so you don't have to worry about that. As an example, let us use the radio station below. This means that the "Always Christmas" online radio station of 1.FM can be accessed through http://www.1.fm/TuneIn/WM/christmas32k/Listen.aspx.

    Name: 1.FM Always Christmas
    URL: http://www.1.fm/TuneIn/WM/christmas32k/Listen.aspx
  2. I'm assuming that you already have it installed and running. Just right-click on the widget itself and select "Add Station".

  3. Now there are two boxes requiring input, "Name" and "URL". Just copy the details from item number 1 above and input the information in the appropriate boxes. When everything is set, just press "Add".

  4. The "Always Christmas" station is now added to the list and can be selected through the drop-down menu.

  5. That's it for the Web Radio widget method!

You should give it a try. It's just great. You don't have to stick to my recommendation; you can use other software. Also, you might as well maximize your idle bandwidth by streaming music to your computer.

Internet Radio Stations

The radio stations listed below are the ones that I have saved in my player. You'll notice that the genre's are varied because I love all types of music. I'll be adding more in the future so please check back every now and then.
