what makes an internet celebrity famous?

here we are talking only about internet celebrities who are famous for the way they look, pictures of themselves, their fashion sense, etc.

there is sometimes fierce competition for the title of reigning Internet It-Girl
often claims of "unoriginality" or "copying" are made in a cruel game of 'queen of the hill'
do these people SEEK OUT this attention or is it unwanted?
is the attention "deserved"?
why do people desire to worship/participate in the idealization of another person who is a stranger to them?
