Internet Gems: Educational and Informational Sites

This lens is an offshoot of another lens that mentions some of the top sites on the internet. It will be beneficial to break the websites mentioned on that one into 2 separate lenses so that I could write more details about them. =)

Both will be updated time to time with more detailed information as well as new links! Some links will be removed over time when and if I come across something that offers better content. =)

I hope you find this to be an informative and useful series (if i could put it in those terms)!

Happy surfing!

Informational Sites

1) InfoPlease
"Research our extensive archive of more than 28 million documents from 2,600 sources."
This is a search engine of sorts but much better than Google. I found it to return better results with less "junk" results. Which is important when strapped for time and not wanting to weed through the internet rubbish pile. Makes the rubbish pile significantly smaller in my view!

3) FreePoliticalDocumentaries.org
stream interesting and provocative documentary films for free
Need something to add to your knowledge about a particular topic? This is a great way. Especially if you are a visual/auditory learner. Since these ARE films you would benefit exceptionally from having a fast internet connection.
--DSL or faster--

5)HowStuffWorks.com
This site is like having an entire library of "How To" books at the tip of your fingertips without taking any space in your home.

Informational Sites: Top Online Directories

1) WorldYellowPages
It is what it is... the yellowpages... for the world. It might come in handy if you are overseas and have access to a computer and need to find services.

2) TravLang
Travel and Language Services. This site has a language translator as well, real nifty.

3) AlphaDictionary
The time of looking up topics in an encyclopedia has pretty much become tedious especially with the advent of the internet. Now, use the internet to search 1065 Online English Dictionaries all at once for the word you are looking for.

Educational Sites: Language Arts

1) Bartleby.com
Bartleby is a reference resource where you can find a vast array of information on classics of reference, literature and nonfiction. I used this site extensively for my Literature classes and writing classes. I found it to be a valuable resource that I certainly couldn't do without.

2) OWL: Online Writing Lab
Online writing lab from Purdue University with extensive resources for writing, grammar and punctuation. Explanation of various grammar rules and exercises to check your knowledge.

3) Grammar Bytes!
This certainly is grammar instruction with an attitude. You could look up several different grammar rules, check out exercises, and even can download presentations and handouts! Real nifty for teachers as well.

4) Federal Resources for Educational Excellence (FREE)
More than 1,500 federally supported teaching and learning resources are included from dozens of federal agencies. New sites are added regularly.

Educational Sites: Medical and Scientific

1) Sicrus For Scientific Information
"Sicrus is the most comprehensive scientific research tool on the web. With over 450 million scientific items indexed at last count, it allows researchers to search for not only journal content but also scientists' homepages, courseware, pre-print server material, patents and institutional repository and website information."

This is a God sent for students who need reliable scientific information. The excerpt from the site that I pasted above for you pretty much says it all.

2) WebMD
This site is much like a medical book but with a search engine. You even could go to a certain part of the site and input what symptoms you have and you'll get a list of diagnosis related to those symptoms. This in no way means you shouldn't go to a doctor. Just it is a great resource to learn more about how to keep ourselves healthy and more about anything medical related.

3) School Psychology Resources
Research learning disabilities, ADHD, functional behavioral assessment, autism, adolescence, parenting, psychological assessment, special education, mental retardation, mental health, and more.

4) Scholarly Psychology Resources On the Web
Offers links to scholarly information about various topics in psychology (statistics as well). A great resource for psychology majors.

Educational Sites: Various Areas Of Study

1) Dummies.com
Here you find a wealth of information on almost any topic. Even has a test prep section which is rather useful.

2) IPL.org (Internet Public Library)
A public library at your finger tips.

3) Business Administration Resources (CSUF Library)
A Pollak Library Research Guide to Business Resources.
The CSUF library has a wealth of resources for your business research needs including books, articles, indexes and recommended web sites. Here you will find Library & research resources for every area of business.

4) Resources for Business Administration
University of Delaware Library offers a variety of resources for Business Administration Majors.
