Internet Marketing Advice

Do you have a specific Internet Marketing Question?

Having been online since 1996 I've learned a great deal when it comes to having an Internet presence and building a business online. This lens is intended not only to help you learn Internet Marketing, but to actually ask questions and get answers (see the Guest book below). While I won't be able to be here everyday, you can expect that I will check in often and answer questions.

Web 2.0 on YouTube

This is hot! Watch it...

Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us

Final version now available! http://youtube.com/watch?v=NLlGopyXT_g http://mediatedcultures.net Web 2.0 in just under 5 minutes. This is the 2nd draft, and I plan on doing one more final draft. Please leave comments on what could be changed or improved, or what needs to be excluded or included. Subscribe if you want to be notified when the revision is released. UPDATE: I just added this video to Mojiti where you can actually write your comments into the video itself. It is an exciting experiment in "Video 2.0". Go check it out at http://mojiti.com/kan/2024/3313 and add your voice! Transcripts are now available as well: http://mediatedcultures.net/ksudigg/?p=78 A couple of people have noted that the statement, "XML was created to do just that" (separate form from content) is misleading because CSS enables the same effect with HTML. I tried to integrate CSS into the video, but it ruined the flow. Perhaps in the next draft. My statement on XML is based on the following from xml.com: "In order to appreciate XML, it is important to understand why it was created. XML was created so that richly structured documents could be used over the web. The only viable alternatives, HTML and SGML, are not practical for this purpose. HTML, as we've already discussed, comes bound with a set of semantics and does not provide arbitrary structure." Thank you all for the comments. With your help the next draft will be cleaned up and hopefully free of factual errors. A higher quality version is available for download here: http://www.mediafire.com/?6duzg3zioyd Please note that this is the second draft and the final version will not be available until late February after I review all comments and revise the video. Please return for a new download link at that time. The song is "There's Nothing Impossible" by Deus, available for free at http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/103/ Deus offers music under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 license, yet one more example of the interlinking of people sharing and collaborating this video is attempting to illustrate. "Off page SEO
is more important than
on page SEO."

Who Knows More?

For the two types of SEO - on page and off page - off page is most important.

Now... I know the statement that I made, "you are your best choice for an SEO expert" is very controversial, however it's what I believe and I've got very good reasons.

First, who knows more about your business than you do? Okay, so you may not know about SEO, but you know about your business.

What is SEO?

I'm not talking about what the letters stand for, I know you know that. But, let me ask you this...

Who is your target audience?

Search engines or people?

Hopefully you said people because search engines don't buy your products or services. Yes, they can bring "targeted" prospects to your web site (depending on where your site show up in results and what keyword(s) you're using), but search engines don't buy from you.

A lot of SEO experts will tell you that you have to make your website search engine friendly, configure the "best" percentage of keywords in the content (seen and not seen), and many other things all to (hopefully?) manipulate search results for the ever-changing algorithms of the machines. Anyone heard of the "Google Slap"? And to think that SEO will overcome the fact that there are 20 million (billion?) pages after the same first page results.

Further, your position on the first page also matters! While 42% of searchers click on the first listing, the percentages go down drastically from there, as in 2% for the last one listed on the first page results. Though I've heard that the 6th position is likely the worst because it's on the "fold".

Hmmm... there's something wrong with that picture, don't you think?

So, what I say is that you need to do a minimal amount of on page SEO, BUT concentrate on giving your visitor what they came there to get... information, services, products... whatever it is. And your visitors don't care about the keyword density except when it's overdone making it difficult and boring to read - they simply click away from your site.

SEO experts can still get you on the first page of Google but for what keyword(s)? Are they keywords searchers use on an average to find what you offer? You can get highly ranked for keywords that are worthless, or grab a few searches for them (even typos).

You know (or should know) the best keywords for your website. If you don't... get to researching!

SEO should concentrate on having a quality site, with quality content, with incoming links to it, adequate META tags (title and description) and a few other things that I will go into here later.

My apologies that it will take some time to be thorough on the subject, but I work for a living and have limited time available.

Just know that I care about all of you and want to help you achieve success and save you from unscrupulous practitioners on the web.

Stay tuned! There will be more. We'll discuss off page SEO soon.

Best Wishes!

Deb

Yes, I have a lot of questions regarding Internet Marketing but I don't have any questions or doubt regarding how this can help us with our business. People who do make online business as their vehicle to success are not frustrated the way their business goes. Everyone, from selling personal checks online including Betty Boop personal checks to teaching somebody who to become a fighter pilot, have raked in a lot of financial success through Internet Marketing! I'll be coming back when I have those questions ready for you and everyone who wants to become successful, too, should start from this very informative lens of yours! Good job!
