Internet Marketing Basics

The first thing you are going to have to do is determine a topic or 'niche' for your internet marketing business.

This can be something you have a passion for - something you have seen on TV or a billboard - or something you have just chosen randomly. There are many ways to come up with an idea for your business topic, but make sure that it is something that is in demand - a product idea or service that people are actually looking for.

You can find out how many people are actually interested in and searching for your topic by using one of the free keyword tools such as Google Adwords Keyword Tool, found here:

It's totally free to use, and by typing in the words or phrases that you think people would use to find your chosen niche, you can see approximately how many people are searching for your term. The keyword tool will give you a list of words and phrases that are relative to the ones you put in.

It's also important that the topic of your internet marketing business doesn't have so much competition that you won't be able to show up in the search engines for it. I like to try to keep this number to around 25 to 50 thousand (or lower).

To find out how much competition you're up against - how many websites there already are about your niche - just do a Google search on each one of your words/phrases. Be sure to put your words/phrases in quotations "" when you search for them so that G will just return the results of pages with that exact term in them.

Also, try to choose a topic that you feel like you won't mind working with for awhile. If you choose a niche that you have no interest in whatsoever, you could get burned out pretty quickly from researching and writing about it - and you don't want that to happen.

After you have settled on the 'perfect' niche for your new business, you will need to create a website or blog for it, but first we need to come up with a domain name for your blog.

You can go to GoDaddy.com, HostGator.com, BlueHost.com, or whatever hosting company you prefer, and, using your best keyword/phrase, check to see if the phrase is available.

If you can get your main keyword in your URL, it will help you a little bit later on with search engine ranking. If your chosen keyword is not available, just try to get a variation of it - something close to it. (Domain names, by the way, are quite cheap. .com's usually cost about $10 per year).

Now you need to decide if you are going to have one of the hosting companies host your domain for you, also very cheap - around $5 - $8 per month, or are you going to utilize one of the free blogging platforms such as Blogger blogs?

There are pros and cons to using the free blogs, but in the event that you are short on cash right now, they are a great option because you won't have to purchase a domain name or hosting. You can also check your domain with them after you sign up for a free account (rather than searching for it through the hosting companies).

Whichever you decide, you will need to go their website, create an account, and follow instructions to get your site up and running.

Now that you have chosen a niche for your business, picked an excellent keyword for and secured your domain name, it's time to create some content to build your new blog.

Content is nothing more than information you either know already about your niche, or information that you have gained through research on the topic, and that you are imparting to the visitors to your website.

Most people who come to the internet are looking for the solution to a problem or to gain some other information, and providing factual, interesting, useful and informative content can really boost your credibility with your visitors.

You also must learn different methods of marketing your new internet marketing business to get it out there in front of some eyeballs. These may include article marketing, Pay per click, SEO, email marketing, blogging, or whatever method appeals to you or that you can afford.

Internet marketing is definitely not get rich quick, but if you are willing to put in the time effort needed to build a successful business, and you are patient and persistent enough to give it a few months to grow, the rewards can be shocking.
