Introduction The Old Approach
I have been a network marketer since 1988 practicing the multilevel marketing system the old fashion way i.e. speaking to family, friends and cold potential prospects about joining my mlm business, inviting and taking them to attend meetings. This was very tiring and frustrating. Many times some refused to answer the phone before the pickup etc thereby wasting my time.
I changed many network marketing companies,always seeking the right one but never making a decent buck. Sounds familiar? After years of frustration and ridicule from my wife who saw the futility of my efforts and she made no secret of lecturing to me on the matter, I gave up.
The New Approach
Two months ago, March 2008, my friend sent me an email mentioning Ann Sieg's free viral ebook
It immediately caught my interest and I decided to check on her link and my whole concept on how to target prospects changed forever. It was indeed a paradigm shift.

The Renegade Network Marketer, I have realized that to be successful in network marketing and any other business on the internet, you have to disregard and discard the old concept of how to recognize your target market.
The new and successful way in marketing Network Marketing and MLM Business Opportunites
The old way of everyone is a prospect, seek out your warm market i.e. friends and family first, the so called 3 foot rule, cold calling, giving out fliers, business card, CDs, DVDs, meeting prospects at malls, taking prospects to weekly meetings etc are to say the least frustrating, demeaning, expensive and generally a waste of time.
There is no wonder that 97% of those who practice this old fashioned way of networkmarketing fail miserably.
I realized that a drastic different approach to the marketing my business opportunity was immediately necessary. This new approach must, and I repeat, must put the emphasis on the prospect not on the product and/or marketing plan of my company.
Know and understand your target market
What do I mean that the prospect comes first? I mean that every effort must be made to know and understand the prospect market you are targeting.
You must seek fervently to know their(prospects') needs, wants, disappointments, problems, goals and aspirations; you have to put yourself in the prospects' place, find out what they are specifically looking and show how what you are offering will help them achieve what they are looking for.
If they are looking for a business opportunity on the internet you have to research what particular keywords they would use. With this knowledge you can then provide them with the free information with the keywords that they seek. This is first step in giving them what they needs.
Prospects are first and foremost looking for solutions when they seek out information on the internet and your presence must be there to provide it to them freely.
They are primarily interested in how what you are offering can satisfy their needs, not what they can do for you in buying your product and if applicable how your business opportunity can make them make money. The bottom line is what the money can do help them achieve whatever their goals are.
Who are your Target Market
Now, you are anxious to find out the "who". Who are your target market?
I will use my situation as an example. You can equate yours in a similar manner specific to your target market.
In my case they are people interested in making money on the internet with the networkmarketing and mlm system.
The main prospects in this category are the people who already know what they need, because they have done network marketing before and have personally experienced the pitfalls of the old frustrating way of doing the network marketing and mlm business as mentioned above.
In this scenario, I already know first hand their frustrations, pain of rejection, failure, thwarted goals, hopes and aspirations. They are looking for information on the internet to overcome their bad experience and to satisfy their need just as I did and was satisfied.
The second kind of prospects are those who may be researching one of the companies, which incidentally I am involved in. For instance, I network Ambit Energy, a company that supplies residential electricity at prices lower than the competition to consumers in NY, IL and TX, because of the deregulation of electricity, which gives the consumer the power to choose.
They may be researching this company and my link may come up with the keywords they used. If I have the information they need then they would contact me for more specific information on the opportunity.
The third kind of prospects are the ones who are looking for a business opportunity on the internet which relates to their keywords. As you know people surf the internet looking for specific information that fit the specific keywords or keyword phases they use in the search.
What information to provide and where do I provide it
Having identified the target market, the next action is to answer the "What information to provide question". What information do I provide that will tweak their interest to make them contact me first.
The answer is I prepare a document like this one with the keywords the prospects are looking for and place it on the internet. Remember I have researched their needs etc. and in my case have personal experience so I know what those keywords are.
When they search for the keywords and my web page comes up , I have in my document the links like The Renegade University which will give them the information they seek for free.
Social Network Marketing System
When they click on the links they will begin the initial process in Social Network Marketing or attraction network marketing as it is sometimes called. This system is interactive i.e. The contents can be changed as the author sees fit as new current pertinent becomes available.
This system encompasses U tube, Squidoo, Blogs, My space, Face book, Ezines articles etc. They will be given the opportunity to be trained to use these social free areas of advertising.
Lead Capture Page
When they click on the links they will be sent to lead capture pages giving them a brief description of what free information relating to their needs they will receive if they provide their contact information.
At a glance at the information, they will immediately see the benefits the free information will give them. It becomes a "no brainer" in providing their contact information. 90% of the time they do give it.
What to say to the prospects
It does not stop there. You may say "yes right" now I have the contact information what will I do with it? What will I say to these contacts?
Well, this new social network marketing system web 2.0 is already set up to deal with your legitimate concern. It recognizes that it is not the system that fails, it is the people who fail. So even if you get the traffic i.e. the prospects call or email you, you cannot close the sale because closing is not your forte.
Auto-responder system in place
An automatic system is already in place to move the contact on your behalf from the lead capture page through an autoresponder system which keeps in constant contact with the prospects providing them with the information they need on your behalf.
In most cases they,the prospects buy into the offer which will be an opportunity to be trained in the rudiments of social network marketing. In most cases, during the training, the lead capture pages lead the prospects to opportunities where you make money as they are being trained and they make money as well.
By the time you are ready to make contact with them they are already aware of at least the basic principles of Social Marketing and feel comfortable to be lead by you in their business opportunity quest.
Conclusion
All of the above indicate that the key to networkmarketing success is knowing and understanding your target market, pre-qualifying them with free information relevant to the specific keywords they use, giving them the support from an automatic support system already set up to provide relevant information on your behalf before you actually make contact with them , the prospects. When you do make contact they are already pre-qualified and willing to partake in bilateral communication with you, because by then you are beginning to be considered as a person who could be respected and trusted as a professional.

I downloaded the free ebook The essential Guide to Social Media. It supplements the doctrine of Social Marketing as we know it from the Renegade University.
It goes against the grain of the traditional marketing which generally "speaks" to the target audience through their advertising message rather than having a 2 way dialog in which people get together and earn one another respect and trust.
As I mentioned, anyone trained in the social marketing techniques can be very successful in any business opportunity.
