Getting The Interview Dress Code Right!

It's very important that you consider the Interview Dress Code and to dress appropriately for an interview. The adage of "you are what you wear" fits very well in terms of interviews.

Employers examine your dress sense to a much greater extent than you can ever imagine and remember that first impression is not just the last one but also a lasting one.

Naturally, interview dress code is different for men and women but one thing which remains common for both is to dress sensibly.

While it may be true that the company you've applied for relaxes their dress on Fridays or other weekdays, you are still not an employee of this company to exercise such relaxations in case your interview falls on these days.

It's logical for an interviewer to view you as a professional if you're well dressed for the occasion. With that background, let's examine the interview dress code for both men and women.

Dress Like the Big Fish: How to Achieve the Image You Want and the Success You Deserve

Interview Dress Code For Men

Interview Dress Code for MenFor men, the safest bet would be business attire. Go with a business suit, preferably with neutral or business colors such as dark grey, black or navy blue.

There is no need to wear a blazer or a different color pants. You must wear a long sleeve shirt well coordinated with the suit. Make sure that the color of the tie is matching as well.

Stick with a black or brown belt with a flat buckle. Don't ever wear a belt with a trendy buckle or the one with something written on it. This looks way too flashy for an interview and simply does not fits with formal attire.

Go easy with cologne by wearing it to a minimum and for heaven's sake, don't forget to shave. Make sure you have no visible jewelry.

Additionally, make sure you go with a neat hairstyle and well trimmed nails. When it comes to shoes stick with formal black or brown leather ones to go along with black or brown socks.

Interview Dress Code For Women

Interview Dress Code For WomenAgain a business suit is the best bet when it comes to interview dress code for women. You can also wear a tailored business outfit with a conservative color such as dark grey, light black or navy blue. A jacket would be a nice optional addition to your business suit but in case you're being interviewed for a managerial position then it's a must.

Make sure you wear minimal makeup which isn't easily noticeable and specifically go with a conservative color for your nail polish in case you wear one (although it would be better to leave it altogether). Make sure you wear no more than one ring on each hand. For shoes, go with the ones with conservative heels.

While it's true that your interview dress code depends significantly on the kind of position you're applying for, the above section for men and women will get you thinking in the right direction. In case you're still undecided on what to wear for your upcoming interview then it would be best to consult somebody who's already working in that company.

Finally, let me add one more thing related to interview dress code in these hard economic times. During the yesteryears of booming economy, wearing non-conformist interview attire was definitely a symbol of risk thinking approach, which definitely offered an advantage in certain job positions.

With the ongoing recession, risk taking is gaining a terrible reputation. Instead employers are looking for reliable candidates which can produce results based on tested methods. It is because of this that dressing in a professional manner is fast becoming the expected standard for today's hiring managers.

In short, stick with formal business attire in case you're not sure about the other options.

Great interview dress guide. I believe this code is especially important for any type of managerial position. I have interviewed thousands of people during my career and I can tell you that how they come dressed to an interview makes a difference. Flashy accessories are something that can really be distracting on an interview.....also see through clothing :) It is amazing what some people feel is appropriate...or maybe they don't really want the job???
