A Brief Introduction to Fairy Tales

One of my favorite types of stories growing up were fairy tales. And why not? Children have vivid imaginations which allow them to be swept away in the magic of the story. Even before I was reading, I would look at the pictures and make up my own stories. My absolute favorite childhood story is "East of the Sun, West of the Moon" by Mercer Mayer which is actually a retelling of a classic fairy tale story.

But what does it take for a story to be considered a fairy tale? When did they first come about?

Well, first of all, there is a bit of a debate about what it exactly takes for a story to be a fairy tale as you can see below in the link to the Wikipedia page on fairy tales. Typically though, fairy tales are stories of a fantastic series of events usually containing elements of magic, fairies, elves, giants, and princes and princesses. As opposed to taking place in an actual place or time, fairy tales usually begin with, "Once Upon a Time" and are typically known for their "Happily Ever Afters," although by no means are they required to end happily. Many fairy tales that originally ended darkly were rewritten to end happily and vice versa.

As to when they came about, it is hard to determine. They have been around for thousands of years, but only some were originally written down. Most began by being passed generation to generation by telling the stories orally.

We Want to Believe

What is it that makes fairy tales so appealing to children and adults alike? (Because they really are for both. Do not be afraid, as an adult to sit down and read a fairy tale. They truly are for you too.)

I think that people want to be swept away by the magic of a fairy tale. We want to be drawn into another world and escape our own from time to time. We want to believe in happily ever afters.

"You know how when you were a little kid and you believed in fairy tales, that fantasy of what your life would be, white dress, prince charming who would carry you away to a castle on a hill. You would lie in bed at night and close your eyes and you had complete and utter faith. Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, Prince Charming, they were so close you could taste them, but eventually you grow up, one day you open your eyes and the fairy tale disappears. Most people turn to the things and people they can trust. But the thing is its hard to let go of that fairy tale entirely cause almost everyone has that smallest bit of hope, of faith, that one day they will open their eyes and it will come true."

She is only seen in the light of a shooting star.
She likes to wear red petals in her skirt. She has gentle green butterfly wings.

    Hi Rae,

Thanks, for your very informative lens on fairy tales! :O)

I was gonna chastise huppa_girl for chastising Disney, but I too grew up on The Little Fairy & was horrified by what Disney did to that story. So, guess I'll have to slap my own hand! Hahaha! :P

I'm happy to refer you to a lens about one of Deepak Chopra's metaphysics books. In this lens, I include a fairytale inspired by a legend he shares in the book's introduction! The characters in the fairytale are named Princess Dawn & Candy, & I write about them a lot.

I still love fairy tales and believe in the power of their magic! The little mermaid was my favorite growing up and boy was I disappointed when they made it into a cartoon movie! I really hate that children experience fairy tales from that happy little Disney place and not from the dusty old Brothers Grimm books at the library. Some of my best times were spent in a corner at the library! The smell of those old binding on the books. The gold embossing on the outside of the pages. How I could be transported to another place and time with words....just words! Thanks for reminding me of that! Excellent topic and an excellent lens!
