Learn Henna Basics
Ranked #10,679 in Fashion & Beauty, #172,459 overall
Overview
"Mehndi is the Hindi word describing the process of painting patterns on the body with henna paste and the resulting stains left on the skin. Using henna paste, intricate patterns are applied to the skin, traditionally on the hands and feet." - Jessica McQueen (http://www.hennacaravan.com/facts.html)
Henna or "Mehndi" is a gorgeous and intricate Middle Eastern art form focusing on the natural dye of the Henna (Lawsonia inermis) plant. Many cultures, countries, and religions have found symbolism and meaning in the signature orange dye. Some of the most dense and impressive designs can be seen on Hindu and Muslim brides! There is a ton of wonderful cultural information out there on the web so I don't wish to delve too deeply into it here but I will list resources for further study.
Here, we're going to learn the basics of making and applying your own henna paste! Important tips and pointers are noted along the way.

Mehndi Materials
The most basic of the basic is Henna Powder and Lemon juice.
Be warned, mixtures can get a lot more interesting! Basically, you are adding an acid (in this case, citric acid) to the powder to draw out the dye. Additional steps would add an oil to carry that dye into your skin.
Everyone's recipe varies! I think it depends upon the application. If you making a batch of henna for a fair or you plan to use it on multiple people, you will want to use ingredients that have a lower chance of causing an allergic reaction. For example, many people like to use Eucalyptus oil while others may find it too harsh and choose to leave it out or substitute with weaker oil. Cajeput and Tea Tree are common substitutes.
Another common variant is sugar. The addiction of sugar or sucralose gives the paste a stringy texture that helps the artist to lay longer, finer lines.

Henna Application Techniques
Henna can be applied with just about anything. Most common are the small mylar cones or the syringes (not needles, just the tube!). However, you could surely use a paintbrush or even a stick.
Some artists have found that it is easier for them to actually sketch the pattern onto the body using a watercolor pencil before the actual Henna application. Personally, I think this is a neat idea!

Caring for Henna
When you have finished your masterpiece, allow the paste to dry and flake off on its own. Avoid the dire need to scratch at it! The longer you can leave it on, the deeper the stain will be.
To prolong the life of your tattoo, cover with a vegetable oil or balm before getting into the shower or pool.
Leftover Henna paste can survive in a cool dark place or a refrigerator for a short time.

Black Henna Warning
You will see warnings on just about ever henna site or store. There is no such thing as Black Henna. Products advertised as black henna most likely contain a chemical called PPD. This chemical can also be found in certain hair dyes and is a terrible skin irritant. I do not advise experimenting with any products claiming to be Black Henna.
Henna Alternatives
Looking for a safe alternative to black henna or a more temporary version of natural henna? There are many body paint supplies out there that can mock the look and durability of the real thing. Temptu is very popular! Reel Creations Ink is worth a look as well!
