Want To Practice Yoga?

One benefit to come from the stress of the modern world is the rebirth of yoga. It's amazing to think that a 3,000 year old practice could have such a profound effect on people, but practicing yoga often affects the root causes of our stress-related problems. Nowadays, yoga is even being prescribed by some medical practitioners for a range of health problems and as a stress reliever to complement other fitness programs.

Sometimes you can tell a person practices yoga just by their demeanor. Often people who have positive energy and seem centered practice yoga on a regular basis. This is not surprising since yoga is more than just a physical exercise. One aspect of yoga focuses on breathing -- a reason why even physically limited people can practice yoga. The breath is a precursor to controlling stress. When your mind is calm, your focus goes to what you want, and we all know that you get what you focus on.

What Type of Yoga Is For Me?

No matter what you want to achieve, there is a form of yoga that will help you get there. You may notice that people from all walks of life practice yoga -- housewives, elderly, professionals, athletes, and even children are all practising a variety of yoga positions, meditation and associated breathing exercises. This is because different forms of yoga focus on different aspects of the mind-body. There are many more types of yoga than are listed here, but this is what you can expect in general --

  • Ashtanga yoga - fast paced and physically intense. Ashtanga workouts follow a set of poses in the same order.

  • Hatha yoga - meditative and at a relatively slow pace, Hatha focuses on breath, basic poses, relaxation techniques.

  • Kundalini yoga - a spiritual type of yoga that emphasisizes breathing, meditation, and chanting.

  • Bikram yoga - also known as 'hot' yoga, this form is taught in heated rooms. Profuse sweating is said to rid the body of toxins.

Who Else Uses Yoga?

Without a doubt, yoga's major attraction is that it combines a physical and mental workout. Beyond that, it is excellent for posture and flexibility which improves many arthritic conditions. Yoga teachers say that the approach of yoga therapy is one of the most effective ways of achieving the mental edge that athletes seek. For many, yoga becomes a way of life -- often giving a more spiritual side to people's lives, although not necessarily linked to religion.

Fans of yoga say that, unlike drug therapy, yoga attacks the cause not just the symptoms. In fact, many people with addiction problems have used yoga as part of their rehabilitation. Yoga offers a holistic approach to health and fitness. Professional athletes, looking for the edge have turned to yoga as a supplementary form of training. They have found that yoga aids their state of mental and physical relaxation between training sessions, and their crucial build-up to big meets, where a competition is usually won or lost because of a mental edge.

Heal Your Mind Body and Soul

It's said there are eight components to yoga -- attitude, discipline, posture and flexibility, breathing, sensory awareness, concentration, contemplation and meditation. When performed properly, in conjunction with proper related breathing techniques, yoga also helps stimulate the circulatory system, the digestive process as well as the nervous and endocrine system.Yoga can play a substantial supporting role to modern medicine, and complement other fitness and exercise programs.
