YAML is used for converting not only the content but the data type information of variables and objects into a format that can be saved in a file or transferred over a network. What makes YAML different is not only that it is designed to be relatively simple for a human to read and understand, but there are modules for nearly every modern programming language that converts YAML code into the given language's native types.
