Drawings from the Soul

In early 2005 I did some experimenting with what I call "intuitive portraits". I've never been much of a portrait artist. One night I was playing around and drawing a friend and I found that my hand wanted to keep drawing other faces on top of my original drawing of her. I decided that maybe my inability to draw faces exactly as they are was not a mistake but my strong intuitive capacity coming to the foreground. I wanted to explore this some more so, as part of a promotion at the Artella Words and Art website I offered free drawings. I expected five responses and received 25 requests!

I didn't have an exact method for this, other than being open to wherever my hand wanted to go with minimal direction, exactly the opposite of what I learned in my college art classes. I worked with some photos of the subject but didn't intend to make the drawing look like them. The drawing on the left is an example of one of those portraits.

Since then I've discovered that there are other artists working in this way and I am fascinated by their process.

Commission Your Own Intuitive Spirit Guide Portrait

You may commission me to do a portrait of one of your spirit guides in one of two sizes: 3.5 x 2.5 inches for $30, or 4 x 6 inches for $50, which includes shipping and handling.

Like the drawings you see above, your portrait will be done with colored pencil on Bristol board paper. Recently I have started working much smaller, doing what are called "ACEO's", or Art Card Editions and Originals. They are 2.5 x 3.5 inches. I am very happy with the way they are turning out.

I accept payment via PayPal up front. I can work with a photograph of yourself or not, but the end result will likely not look like you that much. They don't always come out as having a human body, either, but always a friendly, light-filled face.
