Brilliant Inventions you need NOW!

Or do you? So I asked those smarter than me...

When I was studying prosthetics (making artificial limbs), there was a gent in our class who would design his own 'jigs' (tools he'd invent to help with alignment and motility of a joint while the components were being encased in resin). I was fascinated by his industrious nature and my best friend Sandy and I used to stand there admiring his expertise. It is only by trial and error that one becomes really good at this. Suffice to say that I tried many things that didn't work out. The only thing that ever got me through was this . . . I never gave up. Failure is necessary for success.

A condensed quote I kept on my fridge while in college was, "If everything were to turn out as I wanted it to, I would never experience anything new. My life would be an endless repetition of stale successes." ~ Hugh Prather (1938 - 2010) US author, minister and counselor

WOW, I was granted Lens of The Day on May 5th, 2011 for this one. A special heartfelt thank you to Antoivo (John) who nominated this lens and every member of the Squidoo team who was responsible. UPDATE: they had a son and John sold his lenses to devote time to being a dad. I can't think of a better reason . . .

USB port daisy-chain above looks pretty cool . . .

the computer geek emphasized, 'I dunno how well it works though!'

So, he recommends this one:

Cables Unlimited USB 2.0 7-Port Desktop Hub (USB1870)

Amazon Price: $34.99 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

"As colourful, cute and ergonomic as the above daisy-chained USB cables are (and they are terrific idea), nothing beats a reliable, powered USB hub such as this one from Cables Unlimited: it adds an additional 7 USB 2.0 ports to your PC or MAC. Perfect for the busy family on the go: if you need to charge your smartphone (and your spouse's smartphone), plug in a keyboard or mouse, add an external hard drive (or several drives), use a USB headset, connect a flash drive and your camera in any combination, this hub will connect them all without breaking a sweat. Compact and easy to store, you can take it on the road with your laptop and confidently plug in and charge all your electronic toys." ~ sousababy's head computer geek.

Hey, doesn't this look cool, sleek and trendy?

The next best thing for your used tea bag . . .

Visually, I loved the idea of the saucer hiding a used tea bag. But,

I have big round tea bags that might make it hard for me to balance the tea cup onto the plate successfully. Not only that, if I hold up the tea cup to my mouth and tea drips onto my white skirt (because the tea bag soaked the bottom of the cup) that will be the first and last time I would use this set.

So, thought I'd show you the next best item (and it is not as 'girly' as the hundreds of other ones I have searched out):

Utilo Teabag Holder with Storage Cup

Amazon Price: (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

I really like the price and durability of this set. Dishwasher-safe and no ugly tea bag lying about. Men who drink tea will love this set as many were very feminine in design (and breakable too). Who wants to clean up broken porcelain these days - who has time?

A set of four of these would match any decor too. Stainless steel.

Any other solutions for the used tea bag?

  • Steve_Kaye Apr 30, 2012 @ 7:12 am | delete
Right now, I keep the tea bag in the tea pot. Then I add more hot water to reuse it.

As coincidence would have it, I was just thinking about what can we do with our used tea bags instead of throwing them in the trash! I like the example above for using the tea bag to balance your cup and dripping on your clothes!

Not available on Amazon, yet and I like Schlage:

The next best thing on the market today . . .

Schlage FE595VCAM619ACC Camelot Keypad Accent Lever Door Lock, Satin Nickel

Amazon Price: $100.89 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $278.00

I have been researching the newer fingerprint-recognition based locks and sadly, after 6 months, many fail to work all of the time. Speculation is that they do not recognize fingerprints as much (a possible design flaw) or perhaps outdoor elements (rain, wind, snow, UV rays) adversely affect the 'reader' within the unit.
In any case, industry leaders I have spoken to have regarded the Schlage line of locks as their current choice of high quality locks for homes and businesses. I agree. I have never had any problem with a Schlage lock. LESS THAN HALF price (as of April 12th, 2011) is the one shown here.

Know a better brand or type of lock?

  • MelonyVaughan Feb 24, 2012 @ 6:06 pm | delete
    That is amazing!

the v shape will collect more moisture into the lock
  • sousababy Jun 19, 2011 @ 5:32 pm | delete
Yes, you are right. This could become problematic. I think you are the first person to have noted that possible design flaw. I thought for someone with Parkinsons (or anything causing shaky hands) it would be rather helpful - but I never thought about how rain, snow, ice could get trapped in there. Great observation. Thank you so much for contributing. Sincerely, Rose

Now these look pretty sturdy don't they?

The deal, they are great for smaller pizzas . . .

Progressive International Pizza Scissors

Amazon Price: $12.99 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

This is perfect for small pizzas with maybe one or two (easy-to-cut) toppings. Most kids love just cheese or pepperoni pizza. These work well. Although for tougher crusts or many toppings you will need to wipe these clean often or else the scissor blades may jam on occasion.

For family-sized or multi-topping pizzas . . .

What I found out that an authentic wood oven pizzeria uses:

WMF Profi Plus Stainless Steel Double Wheel Pizza Cutter

Amazon Price: $33.90 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

I thought I'd see what the guys (and girls) use at my favorite wood oven pizza restaurant in Toronto (Canada). I was expecting to see some large chef's knife. But no, it was this double-wheeled ergonomic slicer that can go back and forth like a knife through butter. (Similar to adding multiple blades to shaving razors). Since this restaurant makes hundreds of pizzas per day (and some really loaded with toppings) I quickly observed how this spared time (and overuse injuries, like 'pizza-elbow' - ha, in their employees). Made of 18/10 stainless steel, seamless, hygienic, and dishwasher-safe.

Any other pizza cutter recommendations?

  • piarejuden May 15, 2012 @ 4:21 pm | delete
    This is so great!!
  • Steve_Kaye Apr 30, 2012 @ 7:14 am | delete
This is a great idea. We have used kitchen scissors. Now we use a wheel pizza cutter.
  • digitaltree Apr 26, 2012 @ 7:36 pm | delete
Never though someone would come out with a design for this. When i use to buy a large pizza, i would cut it, with a knife and then grab it with my hand.

A must-have kitchen tool for clumsy types, like me:

For your slicing and dicing needs, less than $10

Deglon 59052 2-Inch Finger Guard Digiclass, Stainless Steel

Amazon Price: $9.95 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

I like that this protects the knuckles as well as the fingers. Made of stainless steel with an adjustable ring that secures it to your middle finger. It even holds the food in place while slicing. Made in France, eronomically shaped and dishwasher-safe. I feel this will cut down (pun intended) on trips to bandage up your fingers while you are prepping in the kitchen.

Do you use or have anything similar?

  • piarejuden May 15, 2012 @ 4:22 pm | delete

Over Bed Table

Amazon Price: $47.22 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $187.95

This is the closest thing I could find that I liked. It is adjustable in height and very sturdy. Given a 4.5-Star rating (76 reviews) and currently is the best price I found. The ones that sit on the bed can cause drinks to spill as soon as you try to sit up (by pressing down with your hands on the mattress). The plastic ones or others have components which fatigue or break easily.

What we use in the hospital lasts, is easy to clean and can be rolled out of the way with ease. Until we see the white bedside table set (shown above) on Amazon, this would be the next best thing for the price and durability.

The Rolling Bench is not (yet) on Amazon

So here's a multi-functional bench worth looking into:

Premiere Products 5RCAT Resin Convert-A-Bench

Amazon Price: $113.97 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

When you click on other views and how components can be turned over, if it were to rain, I thought one could re-stack the back of the bench in such a manner that you could then sit on the dry portion. The price is excellent too (covers for benches are about $40). This all-weather maintenance free design is quick and easy to assemble for indoor or outdoor use.
Given a 5-Star rating and very easy to assemble.

Any ideas to solve a wet bench situation?

Keyboard protector tray which comes close:

Ideaworks JB5798 Handy Lap Tray

Amazon Price: $7.95 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

I love the clear one shown above, however I could still foresee a coffee spilling mishap (in clumsy me). The one shown here (at left) is very reasonably priced and I love that it has a cup holder that actually hugs your large Tim Horton's coffee or large drink at lunch. This was actually designed as a wheelchair lap tray. Made of sturdy molded plastic. easy to wipe-clean. with end pockets. Also great for scooters, auto, sofa's and more.

Do you think this would come in handy too?

Utensil Pot Clips (pack of 3 is the best value)

Trudeau Amazing Pot Clip Stainless Steel Pot Clip Heat Resistant Pot Clip to Hold Utensils to Cookware, Three

Amazon Price: $19.25 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

After reading the section titled 'What's New' on page 68 of the November 2010 edition of Good Times magazine, I just had to buy these. Made of stainless steel and heat-resistant silicone, they remain cool to the touch. I have this tendency to try and balance spatulas, wooden spoons and ladles on the edge of a pot. Oh, but then it falls and splatter goes everywhere (including on me). No more stove top messes and less clean up than using a spoon rest. Heat-resistant to 600 degrees F and dishwasher-safe.

Tell me, what do you think of these?

  • digitaltree Apr 26, 2012 @ 7:41 pm | delete

Rubbermaid that does NOT stain or smell . . .

28-piece set is BPA-free / freezer, microwave and dishwasher-safe

Rubbermaid Premier Stain Resistant 28 Piece Set ~ BPA FREE

Amazon Price: $46.95 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

Just a few years ago I remember hearing, 'there's really no way to remove that orange-tinged stain left behind' in your food storage containers. (You know, after you have stored leftover pasta sauce or lasagna in them). Sometimes they even smell! (Not good if you put jello into a container that reeks of garlic). Shown at left are shatterproof, BPA-free, plastic containers with stackable lids. They resist food stains and odors even AFTER reheating food in them. They can be bought individually (about $3.99 - $11.49 each).

Think yours need replacing? Trying these?
