Benefits of Martial Arts Training

Although the Karate Kid films annoyed a lot of people, the story of the young boy who was bullied before learning some martial arts moves which caused him to defeat his tormentors and gain new confidence has some merit. Martial arts training is not guaranteed to help you win fights but it will improve your fitness and self esteem and it could promote discipline within you if you are dedicated enough. It is important not to take up any martial art for the wrong reasons. If you do, it's inevitable that you will not last long and the whole process will be pointless. This article will look at the physical, mental and practical benefits of martial arts training.

Strength and FItness

First and foremost, martial arts will help you develop your strength and fitness. Of course if you want to further increase your physical strength you could always supplement your sessions with occasional weight training but that's a matter of personal choice. In order to get the best out of your punches and kicks, every muscle in your body will be tested and strained. It is not as simplistic as punches working your arms and kicks working your legs however. With martial arts training, every muscle in your body works in conjunction with each other causing you to get stronger, fitter and more flexible. Best of all, it doesn't require much equipment and you are never too old to learn.

Self Esteem and Self Confidence

Mentally, martial arts training will promote a greater sense of self esteem as well as confidence. As you rise in terms of rankings in a specific art and receive belt after belt on the road to the sacred black belt, you will be imbued with a sense of achievement. You are aware how much dedication and discipline is required to get to the higher levels, and as you rise, you will take great pride in being able to do what so many others can't. You will realize that you are no longer a soft touch and can go about your business in a confident manner.

A Confident Gait

Having this confidence will help you walk tall which is a good way to avoid an attack in the first place. It is rare for an attacker to try their luck assaulting someone with a confident gait about them. Instead, they usually go for someone who looks timid, weak and vulnerable. If someone does make the mistake of attacking you, having martial arts knowledge will give you a better chance of successfully averting the threat than if you had no prior training. Although martial arts can admittedly never prepare you fully for a street attack, showing your assailant that you can take care of yourself could be the catalyst for their swift retreat.

Conditioning Yourself

You shouldn't use martial arts training as a means of getting revenge on those you don't like. It is a discipline that should be learned for fun, to help you with your conditioning and your confidence and it should only be used when you are in a dangerous situation and the only way out is to fight back.
