Investment Options: Keen on Green

While some countries are investing to make the world green, forests in many parts of the world are sold off to big real estate developers or big plantations. Enormous resources are being invested to build dams to block rivers you have never even heard of. All of this for development and to satisfy an insatiable demand for electricity. But are these investments really making the world green and safe or just padding the pockets of investors? Are they the best options? What are the long term consequences.

Some investors have had enough of the rampant degradation of our earth resources and have moved away from investing in companies or even countries that make bad choices and are looking for alternate investments with companies who have demonstrated some social responsibility by actively investing in greener technologies or in developing greener alternative options. Are you one of these investors? Would you like to be? Are you interested in learning more about green investing?

Gains in your Green Investments?

Share your own performance in green investing

Your experience is of value to many who are only thinking about green investing. My husband and I invested in Ballard a long time ago. We gained some money when the stocks skyrocketed but after a few months it plummeted as the fuel cell technology at that time seemed untenable. It is a good thing we sold some before the plummet so our loss was not that much.

Green Technology Options

More are being developed

Remember...there are as many hustlers with their own bad agendas in the green game as in any other....maybe more. These are the great grandsons of the snake-oil drummers of a century ago. Ethanol....Wow was that a con. Grow more corn for fuel, leave less for feed or food and increase food prices. Well done the farm community and distiller manufacturers. Wind farms? Guess how much energy we will ever get from those monstrosities? A European feel-good job creator. Nuclear...a good option as we learn from mistakes and manage our fear. Big players such as GE will make money out of this option so the odds are on your side. Natural gas...wow..here's a great option. Big players but it competes with oil so the megastars of energy (oil companies) will talk a lot and do very little. Cheap, available and much less polluting than oil or coal and using the existing infrastructure.

Batteries to make electrical power more versatile? Big investments going on there. Also into Lithium mining and maybe vanadium to support the new developments. Solar? Big delivery problems. But it is worth a peek. Fuel cells? Several companies are plodding away and if you have deep pockets, this will be a winner....but not yet. Coal? Ouch. Because there's lots of it does not make it good unless you like eating air.

OK, these are a few. But there are many others and you need to narrow your range, pick one or two, do homework on the companies in the sector and dig in for the long haul. New developments and knowledge may disprove my comments here so get updated constantly.

The Risks in Green Investing

Assess your own

Are green investments more risky than regular investments?

Loading

Yes, they are mostly new companies and technologies

No, we are investing in our future

For those who want to try green investing, here is a book to read

On the success of green investment

5 Steps to Successful Green Investing

Here are some steps you can take as an investor to ensure success in this new wave of investing.

1. Have a green investing strategy

Have a plan

Yes, have a plan, an approach, a strategy that will be your guide in your green investing journey. When you have this, you are not tempted to put money in whatever stock is touted as green by magic wand brokers. Have a step by step approach to discipline you when bombarded with information by all those Bloomberg and CNBC analysts. Think of them as semi-crazed entertainers, not mentors. Stick to your plan.

2. Stay away from green washing

Beware of those who just want to appear green

Greenwashing? What is that? Well, many companies and their communication specialists make their stocks appear green though they are far from that. Have your own criteria and do not follow blindly. Inform yourself by reading independent analysts reports. Ask experts you know about the technology if you do not know anything about it. If you can't find someone to enlighten you, stay away from it until you are satisfied you understand it.

3. Develop your own green screen

Have your own criteria of what is green

Your green screen includes your own criteria for what you consider green investment and if those investments do not meet your criteria, leave them. Your criteria are what you value so uphold this or you will not be happy with your own self.

4. Choose a green sector and know it well

Dig deeper

There are several sectors in green investing. Start getting to know one very well and then start investing small first. Then, learn more about the other sectors and invest only when you think you know it well enough.

5. Update information on green technologies

Ask relevant questions

Go and attend those company's annual meetings. Or call their investor relations office and ask your questions. Read their annual reports and news items on these companies and ask the relevant questions. Question the analysts. Participate in forums and ask your questions. This is your best green investment: educating yourself on options.

I definitely am going to think more about this. I voted that I had never invested in green, actually I did at the penny stock level, and lost. But I think I could work harder to find more stable investments. One thing that really interests me for some reason are companies working with garbage. I remember once seeing how tires could be used for fuel, there is a lot we could do. I am inspired to dig deeper. Facebook liked too.

I think that we ought to invest in green companies, but it's necessary to check them out before parting with your money. Hopefully the government will make green more attractive, and give these companies a boost. Excellent information, blessed.
