Investing in Private Number Plates

Ranked #64,327 in Cars, #3,051,880 overall

Looking for an alternative investment? Number plates might just be what you've been waiting for.
We've all read the stories before. A new investment opportunity too good to miss. It's something that captures our attention because everyone likes to make money. Now, with the age of retirement set to increase and the possibility of lower returns on our pensions, the investment route we choose is even more important.

In the UK, people like to talk property. It's a very British subject (along with the weather) - mainly because property prices have historically performed well in the UK and people have made a lot of money if they timed their investment correctly. Other "alternative" investments have also moved into the mainstream. Investments like wine have been heavily featured in the press and have seen a huge surge in popularity. However, the smart money looks away from the crowd as over-subscribed niches inevitably lead to a high risk or low yield investment.

For a true alternative to stocks and shares, try DVLA number plates. They are maintenance free, are used daily by millions of people in the country and have a proven track record in terms of return on investment. When listing these positives it will come as no surprise to learn that savvy investors have been including them in their portfolio for many years.

As with any investment it is important to know your field. Research the market and gain a solid understanding of what sells and what doesn't. You need to target combinations that have wide appeal and which will increase in value as fewer become available.

If purchasing number plates purely for investment, it is best to avoid prefix and new style combinations which simply represent somebody's initials. Plates like G19 DMM or MC02 MJC may mean something to you but a member of the general public wouldn't associate any meaning to them. It is also advisable to avoid rarely used letters such as X or Z - as few people have these letters in their initials. Popular letters are R, B, J, S and P - however these usually command a higher figure.

The older the registration the more vehicles it can be assigned to. AR53NAL is a great combination but no vehicle registered prior to 2003 could feature that registration (it would be a great long term investment though!).

Dateless number plates are an excellent investment (they can be assigned to any vehicle) but getting the right combination is vital. Generally, fewer letter and numbers means the registration is worth more - but again, general appeal is critical.

Remember, you are buying as an investment so you'll need to put all personal tastes to one side as these will no doubt cloud your judgment. Have a good look through the papers to see which combinations the big companies like to advertise and use the web to do research before making your purchase. Many dealers will be happy to help you choose a combination if you explain you are looking to invest, and you don't even need a vehicle to put the registration on - they can be held on retention certificate and renewed each year for a minimal fee.
So if you're looking for great returns and low risk - why not try investing in number plates.
