St Lucia
Described as one of the four most beautiful islands in the world, St Lucia is a tropical haven located with Barbados to the east, Martinique to the north and the Grenadines to the south. The islands history is dominated by the constant exchange in rule by the British and the French, twenty seven times changing hands until St Lucia became independent, but based its government and legal system on the English. In 1842 English became the islands official language but St Lucia retains a strong French heritage with many of the villages having French names.
