Turkey has a very diverse culture that is a sophisticated mixture of elements of the O%u011Fuz Turkic and Anatolian, Ottoman and Western culture and traditions which started with the Westernization of the ancient Ottoman Empire and continues to this day.

This mixture is a result of the encounter of Turks and their culture with those of the peoples who were in their path during the migration from Asia to the West. As Turkey successfully transformed from the religion-based former Ottoman Empire into a modern nation-state with a strong separation of state and religion, a huge increase in artistic expression followed.

During the early years of the Turkish republic, the government invested many resources into fine arts, museums, theatres, and architecture. Because of different historical factors playing an important role in defining modern Turkish identity, Turkish culture is a product of an effort to be modern and Western, combined with the will to keep traditional religious and historical values.
