Fear and jealousy in investment banking

Investment banking is a spiteful business that seems to bring out the worst in some of its participants. There are those who cannot wait to see a close competitor fall on its face. Even more acceptable is the pronouncement of death, which will allow the participants to dance on their competitor's grave.

There are three investment banks in particular - Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and Barclays Capital - that some Euromarket spectators would enjoy seeing taking a fall which would require them to be stretchered away by paramedics and into intensive care. There used to be four, but Société Générale spectacularly met its own internal Waterloo - have you also noticed how little sympathy there is for the French bank?

Of course, the attitude of the ghoulish spectators is based largely on jealousy. Société Générale was "too clever by half", and how could a medium-sized French bank dominate the huge international equity derivatives sector?

The unit of Reliance Energy Ltd., India's second-largest electricity producer by value, will get bids for at least 2 times the stock on offer when it opens at 9:55 a.m. local time, the bankers said, requesting anonymity before an announcement.

Billionaire Chairman Anil Ambani's Reliance Energy quadrupled in value last year, the best-performing stock on India's benchmark index, as the government plans to invest $200 billion in generation and distribution in seven years to sustain record economic growth.

"We like the long-term story in the power sector and we are interested in Reliance Power," said Mahesh Patil, who helps manage $800 million in stocks at Birla Sun Life Asset Management Co. in Mumbai. IPO Investment Tips

There are a plethora of IPO and while they give good opportunities to make money they can also be dangerous if one doesn't exercise caution in the choice of IPOs that one invests in.

While conventional wisdom has it that stocks should be bought into only with the intention of holding on to them
for the long term and money can only be made if one waits
on their investment for at least an year or so. While this is
true and investors as far as possible should stick to this maxim IPOs are generally priced at a discount to their intrinsic value and can present opportunities of what is known as Listing Gains.

Here are a couple of tips that should hold you in good stead while investing in any IPO.

Submitting a Disability Insurance Claim

Disability Insurance

Starting the claims process for long term insurance income is fairly simple. Individual and group policies (in the Summary Plan Description, or SPD for short) both lay out who to notify: with an individual policy, contact your insurer; if a group plan, run to the HR department or employer. If you have misplaced your policy, call your insurance company for a copy. Read it carefully and educate yourself.

Start your long term disability insurance claim early, as time is not on your side. Most insurance policies have time limits within which you must notify the company. The longer you wait-perhaps to collect more information to support your claim-the more you risk a delay in review and payment in your mail box. (However, if you miss this time limit, many states require the insurer to prove prejudice caused by the late submission.)

You will then be provided with a number of forms to be completed and signed regarding the claim.

Same day loans - When you need cash in 24 hours

Easy to Get Cash Loan

What would you do if your month's pay is exhausted and you have some urgent need of cash? A bank overdraft is an option but that comes with a fee. Here is one option which is cheaper than a bank overdraft. It is called a same day loan.

A same day loan offers an easy loan option to individuals who are in urgent need of extra cash. A same day loan can be alternately called as a pay day loan or a cash advance. A typical characteristic of these loans is that a fixed finance charge is associated with these loans and there is no interest if payments are made in time.

Advantages of same day loans

1. If we take a look at the uses into which the same day loans are put into, we can easily make out how valuable the service is. Imagine a sudden large expenditure comes up at your home during a particular month and you exhaust your month's salary in the 2nd week of the month. A credit card bill follows or a rental payment is to be made out. In case of a credit card if you don't make the payments then there is a chance of delinquency which would involve a large financial charge along with the interest charges. In case of a rental payment the goodwill of the owner is lost if payments are not made in time.

Corporate venturing obstacles: Sources and solutions

Corporate venturing

There is a fundamental conflict between new venture and mature company management requirements. As an enterprise evolves, the focus for success shifts from sensing and seizing opportunity to protecting and utilizing the resources that have been acquired. In surviving companies, management practices change to accommodate this changing need. The conflict arises when the mature company attempts to initiate internal new venture activities. Application of mature company practices to management of new corporate ventures is not only inappropriate, but breeds failure.

To succeed with new ventures, top corporate management must first understand the inherent differences in management needs for new ventures versus the mature organization, and must then adapt a pluralistic management style that accommodates both needs. This paper examines the rationale for ten "establishment" practices and the adverse effects they can have on new ventures. From this analysis, alternative "entrepreneurial" management practices are recommended.

The ten management practices examined are...!

Do You Need Disability Insurance?

Ask any financial planner or insurance agent what risk could be called "the forgotten risk," and, chances are, the answer will be disability. Their clients often come in the door questioning whether they have too little, too much or the right kind of life insurance, but rarely have they thought about how they could survive financially with no earned income.

In reality, disability insurance is as important as (and in some cases, even more important than) life insurance.

Let's face it: Nobody likes to think about what life would look like should disability strike. But the reality is one third of all Americans between the ages 35 and 65 will become disabled for more than 90 days, according to the American Council of Life Insurers. One in seven workers will be disabled for more than five years. And while many people think that disabilities are typically caused by freak accidents, the majority of long-term absences are actually due to illnesses, such as cancer and heart disease. The loss of income can be so devastating that 46% of all home foreclosures are caused by a disability, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Mega-Mergers, Mega-Influence

Mergers and Acquisition

New Haven - Congress is about to eliminate the legal walls that separate commercial banks, brokerage firms and insurance companies - opening the doors to a new wave of mega-mergers. Critics worry that huge banks will dampen competition and pay less attention to the average customer. But by itself, sheer size - whether in finance or in other industries - should not be a concern. The real problem could be the unchecked political influence of the new global goliaths.

In just the past few years corporate giants have emerged across all industries. Citibank and Travelers, Bank of America and Nationsbank, and Deutsche Bank and Bankers Trust are among the major mergers that have reshaped banking. In other industries, Daimler-Benz has linked up with Chrysler; AT&T with Mediaone; British Petroleum with Amoco; Aetna with Prudential Health. Still awaiting regulatory approval are some of the biggest combinations of all, including those between Exxon and Mobil, MCI Worldcom and Sprint, and Viacom and CBS.

The secrets of successful M&As

Mergers and Aa\cquisitions

Integrating a new acquisition into your business is one of the most daunting challenges any management team can take on, but getting it right is actually quite simple - you just need to learn from your mistakes.

Yet according to research from the Conference Board, too few management teams spend the time to learn what works and what doesn't when it comes to integrating new businesses, with the result that too many M&As fail to deliver their promised value.

The U.S study echoes a European poll published in March by consultancy Hay Group which suggested that more than nine out of 10 corporate mergers and acquisitions fall short of their objectives because business leaders too often got bogged down with finance and technology issues and fail to spend enough time integrating corporate cultures and management styles.

What's The Correct Way To Trade An Initial Public Offering?

Trading With The Trends - Initial Public Offering

Source: www.meta-formula.com

The initial public offering is a part of the market that always generates a great deal of interest, along with stories of fabulous profits and spectacular losses. But there are a ways to reliably profit on the initial public offering. Look for the trends that the initial public offering may cause and trade with them.

Initial public offering spinoffs are a solid trading trend to work with. A company that's going to spin off a part of itself as an initial public offering tends to move steadily up in price until the initial public offering date, starting a week or two before that date. On the day the initial public offering starts to trade, the parent company's stock typically dips sharply. The best strategy is to buy the parent once it starts moving in anticipation of the spinoff, sell it the day before the initial public offering is to begin trading, and then short the parent just after the initial public offering starts to trade.
