Is someone there?
The modern invisible man has its roots in H.G. Wells' story from 1897, but man has been telling stories of of invisibility since Amon-Ra, who could disappear and reappear at will, joined the Egyptian pantheon in 2008 B.C.
Since Wells' story first started appearing in serials, there have been many retellings and variations on the invisible man (and woman) on television and in the movies. But rarely has this power worked out well in the long run for the person who has it with insanity the most common side effect.
The Invisible Man: Where The Modern Version Began
The Invisible Man is a science fiction novella by H.G. Wells published in 1897. Wells' novel was originally serialised in Pearsons Magazine in 1897, and published as a novel the same year. The Invisible Man of the title is Griffin, a scientist who theorises that if a persons refractive index is changed to exactly that of air and his body does not absorb or reflect light, then he will be invisible. He successfully carries out this procedure on himself, but cannot become visible again, becoming mentally unstable as a result.

So You Want an Invisiblity Cloak?
- Invisiblity cloak unveiled
- 2006 - An invisibility cloak that works in the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum has been developed by researchers in the USA.
The cloak works by deflecting microwave radiation around an object, making it appear to an receiving instruments as though there were nothing obstructing it at all, rendering it, effectively invisible. The technology is described in a paper published in October 2006 in the U.S. journal Science. - How Invisibility Cloaks Work
- Harry Potter's invisibility cloak seems perfectly believable when you're reading about a fictional world filled with witches, wizards and centuries-old magic; but in the real world, such a garment would be impossible, right? Not so fast. With optical-camouflage technology developed by scientists at the University of Tokyo, the invisibility cloak is already a reality.
- Millitary seeks invisibility cloak
- Imagine an invisibility cloak that works just like the one Harry Potter inherited from his father.
Researchers in England and the United States think they know how to do that. They are laying out the blueprint and calling for help in developing the exotic materials needed to build a cloak.
The keys are special manmade materials, unlike any in nature or the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. These materials are intended to steer light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation around an object, rendering it as invisible as something tucked into a hole in space. - Gold ring create first true invisibility cloak
- 2007 - The world's first true invisibility cloak - a device able to hide an object in the visible spectrum - has been created by physicists in the US. But don't expect it to compete with stage magic tricks. So far it only works in two dimensions and on a tiny scale.
The new cloak, which is just 10 micrometres in diameter, guides rays of light around an object inside and releases them on the other side. The light waves appear to have moved in a straight line, so the cloak - and any object inside - appear invisible.
