IP Address Basics
Your IP (Internet Protocol) address, is the number that is used to identify your computer on the Internet. Your IP Address is assigned to you by your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Depending on your ISP, you can be assigned a new IP each time your connect (dynamic), or given one that doesn't change (static). Either way, your IP address is shown to every site that you visit. This is required, since the site you are visiting must know where to return its content. However, since your IP is linked to your ISP, it is also possible to determine your approximate location based on your IP address.
Other information may also be passed to every site that you visit. This includes what browser you are using, what operating system you are running, and other relatively innocuous information. Those of us who are curious or perhaps concerned with privacy may wonder what information is passed to the sites we browse. There are many useful sites on the Internet that provide this information. Searching "my ip address", or "my location" may return some of them.
