Comparison of the iPad 2 vs the PlayBook
Tablet PCs, like the iPad, will continue to dominate the mobile computing landscape in 2012. These versatile, portable, multi-touch interface and wireless devices have captured the consumer's attention and pocketbooks becoming one of the most popular consumer gadgets of 2012.
Apple Inc. has led the way since its launch of the first generation iPad in April 2010 and has capitalized on that lead with their second generation new iPad 2 launched in March 2011. There has been a lot of buzz since the original iPad was unveiled by Apple's charismatic CEO, Steve Jobs.
Based on Apple's quarterly reports, 14.8 million iPads were sold worldwide in 2010 capturing 75 percent of the market share. Since the iPad tablet PC was launched, there have been several other competitors who have followed suit like the Samsung Galaxy, RIM PlayBook, Toshiba Thrive, HP Slate 500, Dell Streak, Motorola Xoom and others.
On this web page, I will focus on the comparison of Apple's iPad 2 vs RIM's PlayBook to see how they stack up. RIM's Blackberry PlayBook was launched on April 19, 2011.

Comparison Chart of Key Features (iPad 2 vs PlayBook)
The above comparison chart will give you a quick snapshot of some of the key specifications and features of the Apple iPad 2 and Blackberry PlayBook tablet PCs.
In the sections below, you will find detailed features of the iPad 2 and the PlayBook. Now let's compare the key features of the two tablet PCs, side-by-side, to help you make a decision on whether the iPad 2 or PlayBook suits you better.
Operating System: the iPad 2 runs on Apple's powerful iOS 4.3.1 operating system which helps in the seamless multi-touch navigation interface. Whereas the PlayBook runs on a newly-built QNX Neutrino operating system which is believed to be great for multi-tasking to run multiple applications and fluid navigation. Based on initial tests, it seems comparable to Apple's OS, however, given that the consumer has not yet used it, we will have to wait and see the reviews.
Processor: the iPad 2 has Apple's A5 dual-core processor, while the Playbook has the OMAP 4 dual-core processor from Texas Instruments. Both the processors have a speed of 1 GHz, so both tablet PCs are comparable for speed, however, as per some benchmark tests, the PlayBook scored better on speed based on the combination of the processor, operating system, RAM and browser (see above video).
Memory & Storage: in terms of hard drive storage, both the iPad 2 and PlayBook offer several options 16, 32 and 64 GB, however, the PlayBook also offers an option with 8 GB. In any case, they are both comparable for storage space, however, the PlayBook comes loaded with twice as much RAM. That is, the iPad comes loaded with 512 MB whereas the Blackberry PlayBook comes with 1 GB.
Display & Screen Resolution: both, the iPad and the PlayBook have multi-touch displays, however, the iPad is bigger in size (9.7 inches) and has an LED-backlight compared to PlayBook's 7 inch LCD display. In this case, size would matter depending what you plan to use the tablet PC for. In terms of screen resolution, both the tablet PCs are comparable (see comparison chart above), however, given that the PlayBook screen is smaller, the picture quality would be sharper.
Camera & Flash Support: Apple has introduced front and back cameras in the iPad 2 which was a drawback in the first generation iPad. However, the PlayBook has the same (i.e. front and back cameras) with better HD quality. The flash that I'm talking about here is not the camera flash, rather Adobe Flash support for a better web experience, especially with many websites being Flash driven. Apple's iPad 2 has no Flash support, whereas the Blackberry PlayBook does.
Battery Life & USB Port: the battery life of the iPad 2 is second to none and can last up to 10 hours, in some cases more depending on usage. On the other hand, the PlayBook has a battery life of around 8 hours. The iPad 2 does have USB support, however, it is via the dock connector, whereas, the PlayBook has a built-in micro USB and HDMI port which is much more convenient.
Apps Availability: depending on what you use your tablet PC for, the availability and flexibility of running applications on your tablet PC may make a difference. Apple iPad 2 users have a huge advantage of thousands of apps through Apple's App Store. However, the PlayBook will have access to the Google Android App Market which is second in competition to Apple's Apps Store.
Smart Cover: one of the unique features of the iPad 2 is its Smart Cover which is more than just a protective cover for the iPad. Essentially, it's a cover that fits on the face of the iPad and has built-in magnets which help it attach itself to the tablet. The Smart Cover folds in four places to conveniently turn it into a keyboard stand, video-viewing stand as well as helps turn the iPad on and off (i.e. put it in sleep mode).
Price Comparison: in terms of the price, both tablet PCs are comparable, but the price will depend on the choice of memory storage and wireless connectivity. For example, an iPad with 32 GB storage and Wi-Fi connectivity will cost around $600 (adding 3G connectivity will increase the cost of the iPad). When compared to the Blackberry PlayBook, the same storage and wireless connectivity specifications (i.e. 32 GB and Wi-Fi) will cost around $600 as well.

Apple iPad 2 Review
Apple launched its iPad 2 (second generation) in March 2011 and has made some significant improvements over the original first generation iPad. Let's review some of the key features, specifications and improvements of the iPad 2.
Overall, Apple has made the iPad 2 slimmer, lighter and faster. The iPad runs on Apple's iOS 4.3.1 operating system which allows the seamless multi-touch gestures on the iPad screen.
The new Apple A5 dual-core 1 GHz processor debuted on the iPad 2 which doubles the CPU speed and is capable of adjusting its frequency to conserve battery life. In terms of memory storage, the iPad 2 offers three options: 16, 32 and 64 GB along with 512 MB of RAM which has been doubled from 256 MB since its first generation iPad.
The iPad's dimensions are 7.3 x 9.5 x 0.3 inches with a 9.7 inch multi-touch display and an LED-backlight which makes it easy to operate in low light. It has a 1024 × 768 resolution and include front (VGA) and rear (3 MP) cameras with 720p HD quality.
The rechargeable lithium-polymer battery has a phenomenal 10 hour battery life. And though it supports a USB and HDMI port, they are not built-in on the tablet, rather on the Dock Connector. It doesn't have Adobe Flash support which makes the web experience a little less impressive for sites with Flash content.
In terms of apps, Apple iPad users have a huge advantage with access to the best app store with thousands of applications available. The other unique feature is the newly introduced Smart Cover which is a cover that fits on the face of the iPad with built-in magnets. The Smart Cover folds in four places to conveniently turn it into a keyboard stand, video-viewing stand as well as helps turn the iPad on and off.
The price of the Apple iPad 2 varies depending on memory storage and wireless connectivity. Below are approximate prices for the iPad 2:
• Apple iPad 2 with 16GB + Wi-Fi = $500
• Apple iPad 2 with 32GB + Wi-Fi = $600
• Apple iPad 2 with 64GB + Wi-Fi = $700
There will be an additional cost for 3G connectivity. See how the iPad 2 tablet compares to the Blackberry PlayBook.

New and Improved iPad 2
Apple iPad 2 MC770LL/A Tablet (32GB, Wifi, Black) 2nd Generation
Amazon Price: $525.00 (as of 06/02/2012)![]()
The Apple iPad 2 is the second generation iPad that was launched in March 2011 with some new and improved features. It's much slimmer, lighter, faster due to increased RAM, includes two cameras (back and front) which is great for taking pictures as well as face-to-face chats and is better for multi-taking. These features alone convince me to go for the iPad 2 instead of the first generation iPad.

Overview of RIM's Blackberry PlayBook

Blackberry PlayBook Review
Research in Motion (RIM) launched its Blackberry PlayBook tablet PC in April 2011 in U.S. and Canadian retail stores. The PlayBook is set to rival its competitor, Apple's iPad 2 and initial reviews of RIM's new tablet PC are impressive. Let's review some of the key specifications:
The PlayBook will run on a newly-built QNX Neutrino operating system. Coupled with the 1 GHz OMAP 4 dual-core processor, it will enhance multi-tasking and run multiple apps without compromising speed. In terms of memory storage, the PlayBook will offer several options like 8, 16, 32, and 64 GB and will come loaded with 1 GB of RAM.
The dimensions of the PlayBook are 5.1 x 7.6 x 0.4 inches and it weighs just shy of one pound. The 7 inch screen is an LCD multi-touch display with a resolution is 1024 x 600. The PlayBook comes fitted with front (3 MP) and rear (5 MP) cameras with 1080p HD quality. It also supports Adobe Flash and HTML 5 to provide a rich multi-media web experience.
The lithium-ion battery is expected to last around 8 hours of continuous use. The unit will come with micro USB and HDMI ports for interfacing with a computer and/or HDTV. The PlayBook will support Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n networks plus Bluetooth.
The original price of the Blackberry PlayBook was set as shown below and varied depending on memory storage and wireless connectivity. Given that RIM has faced many challenges in the past few months, the company decided to lower to prices of the Playbook, for example, you may get the 16GB Playbook for as low as $200:
• BlackBerry PlayBook with 16GB + Wi-Fi = $500
• BlackBerry PlayBook with 32GB + Wi-Fi = $600
• BlackBerry PlayBook with 64GB + Wi-Fi = $700
See how the Blackberry PlayBook compares to Apple's iPad 2.

- Very good comparison, thanks. The only thing I'm not sure about is the 'comparible' screens. While the resolutions are the same, in theory the Playbook would be sharper because it requires smaller pixels for the screen resolution. (Playbook works out to 182ppi, iPad/iPad2 is 132ppi.)
I have dual 24" monitors for my home workstation PC, I have a 67" TV for my media centre PC for using in the living room. So a tablet-PC is not a replacement for a home PC in my case. I have an iPad (not iPad2) that I use on the train, or WiFi when vacationing, and games for the kids. I am seriously considering selling it and moving to the Playbook. I understand this doesn't apply to everyone, but in my case the iPad doesn't really suit my needs. When watching videos the movies are scaled down because the screen is 4:3 aspect ratio, movies are 16:9, so I end up with black bars on the top/bottom---the actual movie-viewing area is more like a 7" tablet anyway. Lack of stereo speakers on the iPad makes movie watching very unenjoyable, it's difficult to hear the dialog during action scenes unless you use headphones. And also for the kids, they play a lot of online website-based education games, or cartoon watching. This is exclusively flash-based, so these sites don't work for them. I don't believe in paying for stuff that is already free. (i.e. why should I buy Angry Birds for $5, when it's available online for free to play on Flash websites?) I tried it on a Galaxy Tab in an in-store demo and the flash-version played just as smoothly as the iPad version.
I'll wait for the iniital reviews before I make my decision, but hopefully this tablet will fit my needs better.

- Thanks for your very thoughtful feedback and input based on your experience so far. You're right about the picture being sharper on a PlayBook, however, given that we're talking about smaller screens, in both cases, the difference won't be huge. In my case, as well, I would be using it more on-the-go rather than trying to replace my laptop, so I would lean towards the PlayBook, but probably would prefer a slightly bigger screen. I'm playing the waiting game too. Knowing Apple though, they will continue to better their tablet as the competition tries to keep up.

- Thanks Janiece...yeah, they are both impressive tablets and the iPad 2 has significant improvements over the first generation iPad. The PlayBook on the other hand won't create the same buzz as the iPad, but I think is a serious contender!

- I don't have either. For now, I enjoy my 23" monitor which enables me to do many things at once. I can comfortably look at 2 screens at the same time but, sometimes, have 4 open at a time. If I was to choose between them, I might go with the Playbook but the screen of the iPad is bigger which might play a factor for me.
Beautiful lens...
