iPad vs Kindle Fire Comparison Review

Comparison Of The Kindle Fire and The iPad 2

A comparison review of the Ipad and the Amazon Kindle Fire

Amazon shocked the gadget world by releasing the new Kindle Fire Tablet at the truly amazing price of $199 - a full $300 cheaper than Apple's cheapest iPad 2 .

With a price that means that you could buy two Kindle Fires and still have $100 in your pocket for the price of Apple's $499 entry level iPad 2, this review makes a comparison of the two tablets to see where Amazon have made their savings and whether the Kindle Fire actually stacks up when it comes to the specs.

You can see from the table below that whilst the Kindle Fire is less weighty than the iPad 2 on price, Amazon haven't scrimped on what goes on inside.

Ipad vs Kindle Fire: Flash Compatibility

Kindle Fire allows access to Flash websitesOne of the key selling points of the Kindle Fire over the iPad 2 is that it is Flash compatible.

Apple have publicly stated that they will never introduce Flash support to the iPad and so iPad users will find that there are a large number of websites and games that just won't work on the iPad. Unless Flash is phased out altogether this will always be the case, and that isn't likely to happen any time soon.

The Kindle Fire has a similarly powered dual core processor to the iPad 2 so with its flash capabilities it should have no problem powering graphics intensive Flash based games

Below: Which ranks best for portablility?

Ipad vs Kindle : Portability

Use The Kindle Fire One HandedAmazon and Apple have taken different approaches to the form factor of their tablets.

Steve Jobs and Apple believe that a big screen is everything and the iPad 2 comes with a 9.7 inch high quality IPS screen. The downside of that big screen is that the iPad 2 measures 9.5" x 7.31" and is therefore hard to fit into a coat pocket or a smallish handbag.

Amazon believe that portability is king and so have equipped the Kindle Fire with a 7 inch screen allowing it to be shrunk to only 7.5" x 4.7" - around the size of a regular book.

The smaller size of the Kindle Fire means that it weighs considerably less than the iPad 2 - 414g compared to the iPad 2's hefty 601g.

This upshot of this smaller size and lighter weight is that the Kindle Fire can be used one handed when reading on a crowded train as with a conventional e-reader like the original Kindle. The iPad 2 on the other hand is too wide and heavy to be used one handed meaning you really need to be sitting down to use it comfortably.

Kindle Fire vs Ipad 2: Creating or Viewing Content

Kindle Fire is for viewing content only

Kindle Fire Content When Apple designed the iPad they were unsure what people would use a tablet for and so they equipped it with a number of features which allow you to create and edit content such as photos and videos.

Amazon have realised that most people use their tablets purely for watching content - whether web browsing, watching movies or reading books. This means that, whilst the Kindle Fire doesn't have a camera and has less storage than the iPad 2, for 99% of users its features will allow them to do exactly what they want with their tablet whilst still keeping the price of the Kindle Fire at a point at which people would be happy to buy one for their kids.

Kindle Fire vs iPad 2 : Silk Web Browser

The iPad 2 features Apple's Safari browser which is one of the best tablet browsers on the market.

Amazon have introduced a new browser on the Kindle Fire - the Amazon Silk browser. Amazon's selling point for Silk is that it will pre-download webpages so greatly reducing the wait time when browsing.

Silk will have predictive abilities so that it will guess in advance what it expects you to click on next so that the content will load far more quickly.
It remains to be seen how Silk performs in real world use but anything that can speed up the wait time for webpages to load has to be a great advantage in a world where tablet loading times are often frustratingly slow.

Kindle Vs Ipad 2: The Price

Kindle Fire - Does the price add up?Whilst Apple have been skimming the cream off the tablet market since the iPad was launched, with their entry level tablets starting at $499 in the US, Amazon are actually making a loss on the Kindle Fire by selling it at $199 according to this hugely publicised article.

When you consider that you could buy two or three Fires for the price of an iPad (which for someone like me means one for myself, and one for each child i.e. a lot less bickering over who uses it next) it becomes almost a no brainer for which one to choose, unless you are someone for whom money really isn't the issue. Of course, for some people the camera and editing ability are also a key feature, and for them the iPad is also a great choice, but as someone with a camera, this isn't a consideration for me.

Kindle Fire will work good for me. I have a iPod touch 4 and all I need is a few apps and web browsing, not to mention with flash!

I certainly don't think the Kindle Fire is going to compare to the iPad in terms of overall functionality. That being said, I really like the smaller size and think Amazon, in comparison to other Tablet devices, is offering a lot in their new Kindle Fire for the $199 price point!

Yes, I think it will be particularly good for families with kids. I don't trust my kids with an iPad, but I would with a kindle fire.
