iPhone 4S Sucks, Get an Android phone

The iPhone 4S is a Disappointment - Android Phones are Better

Apple really dropped the ball with the iPhone 4S. Everyone always eagerly awaits the next new iPhone. Most people consider it to be the gold standard against which other phones are judged. However, it just doesn't have enough to offer over the latest Android phones to bother with. It's better than iPhone 4, but that's not saying much as there are a lot of phones out there better than the iPhone 4 nowadays.

I'm going to tell you what's new in the iPhone 4S over the iPhone 4. Of course, it's not a terrible phone and it does have some interesting features. I'll get into those, but then I want to share with you some reasons I like some Android phones more than the iPhone 4S.

After that, I'll run down the Android phones you should consider over the iPhone 4S, and why I like them more.

All about the new iPhone 4S

Good, but not great

iPhone 4S... MehLook, the iPhone 4S isn't at all a bad phone. It's better than 99% of the phones out there. I'm no iPhone hater and I actually use an iPhone on a daily basis. However, this latest iPhone 4S just isn't a big enough leap forward over the iPhone to be worth the upgrade. Let me tell you why I think so.

What's new? The new iPhone 4S has a faster processor, better camera, and Assistant. These are the features it brings over the iPhone and it just isn't enough.

The faster processor is a dual-core A5, while the iPhone has a single-core A5. It supposedly makes games run faster, yada, yada, yada. Look, the best Android phones are just as fast, if not faster with dual-core processors, too. Apple is just playing catch-up here which isn't a position they're accustomed to being in. If the new processor was a lot faster, or had extra cores, or used much less battery power, then it might be worthy of the WOW factor. It's simply not enough to be playing catch-up.

The better camera in the iPhone 4S is an 8MP camera capable of taking video in high definition. The camera in the iPhone 4 is only 5 MP. Sounds great, except that there have been Android phones with cameras at least as good for over a year now. And they didn't upgrade the front-facing camera. It's still just a VGA camera while many phones have front-facing cameras in the 2 MP range. Again, Apple is just playing catch-up with the iPhone 4S. It's not really better in any way over offerings of some great Android phones.

Lastly, the iPhone 4S brings the Siri Assistant. This is the one feature that really stands out over any other phone out there. It's basically very fancy voice control of the iPhone. You can speak to it in a natural voice to give commands or ask for information. It's very smart and capable of understanding all kinds of queries and orders. Like, "Set an alarm for 6 am tomorrow". Bam! Alarm set. It can also access your location, and do things based on where you are. For instance, "remind me to buy eggs at the grocery store". When you're passing a grocery store, Assistant tells you to get eggs. Pretty sweet.

However, I'd never use it, and neither will most people after one or two times for the novelty. Why? Most of us just try to remember on our own, or it's easier to just set the alarm by hand. It's great, but I'd just forget to use it. I remember setting up voice control on my Mac a year or so ago. It worked, but it's easier to just do a couple of clicks than tell the computer.

In the end, the iPhone 4S is a fine phone, but it's just not good enough to beat the competition. Let me show you some of the competition...

What does Android have to offer?

Why Android phones are better

Android is Better than iPhoneOn the surface, most smartphones seems pretty similar. Unless you're always keeping up to date, it's hard to tell what's the latest and greatest. iPhones are pretty good phones, no doubt about it. But they're missing a lot that other phones have to offer. In particular, phones running the Android OS have a great deal of functionality missing on the iPhone 4S.

Like what?

  • No external storage - no microSD card slot for adding storage.

  • No file system access - you can't save and retrieve file from wherever you want on the phone.

  • Static icons instead of dynamic widgets that update continuosly

  • No turn-by-turn GPS navigation built in.

  • No flash on websites

  • Removable batteries

  • Customization, customization, customization...

Really, this is just scratching the surface. But these are the main things that getting an Android phone allow you to do that an iPhone can't (or Apple won't allow).

Best Android Phones

Let's see the best Android phones

Samsung Galaxy S II

AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint (called Epic 4G Touch)

more info
The Galaxy S II is an absolutely awesome phone. It's been flying off the shelves in Asia and Europe, and only just recently made it to the United States on AT&T, T-Mobile (available starting Oct. 12), and Sprint (called the Epic 4G Touch). The Samsung Galaxy S II is the phone to get if you want the very best. Why? Here's what it's made of:

*There are slight differences depending on which service provider you get the phone on.*

Huge 4.52" AMOLED (4.3" on AT&T) screen. The iPhone 4S only has a 3.5" screen. Win! The Galaxy S II screen is big, bright, and beautiful.

1.2 GHz dual-core Exynos processor (1.5 GHz Snapdragon on T-Mobile). Easily faster than the iPhone. There's no good reason for Apple to be playing catch-up all the time. They simply went from a single-core processor to a dual-core processor, which most top Android phones have had for over a year now.
more info
The Galaxy S II comes with a microSD storage card, which the iPhone 4S does not have. The iPhone may have more storage out of the box, but if you get the 16 GB version and find you need more space, you're out of luck. You're stuck with 16 GB. The Galaxy S II comes with an extra 8 GB card (in addition to the 16 GB or 32 GB built-in) which can be changed for a 32 GB card. Also, you can have as many microSD cards as you want, so there's essentially unlimited storage capacity.

The Galaxy S II weighs 116 grams compared to the 140 grams the iPhone 4S weighs. 140 grams isn't exactly a heavyweight, but at 116 grams, the Galaxy S II is almost a featherweight. I've had phones in about the same weights, and I can tell you that you'll feel the difference in your pocket over time.

Motorola Droid Bionic

Verizon

More infoSadly, the Samsung Galaxy S II will not be available on Verizon. If you're one of these unfortunate souls, the phone to get is the Motorola Droid Bionic. There are several reasons why it's better than the iPhone 4S, so I'll share them with you.

4G LTE is fast. Super fast; and it's not available on the iPhone 4S. This was a huge oversight by Apple, because if they'd had LTE, it would have killed any serious competition. What's LTE? LTE Stands for Long Term Evolution and it's the next giant Internet speed bump on cell phones. Only large cities have LTE at the moment, but all the major carriers are hard at work upgrading their equipment and it will be much more widespread soon enough. By including LTE on the Droid Bionic, Motorola has made this phone future proof while the iPhone 4S will look like a snail in a year or two.

Large 4.3" screen. Again, another phone with a big, beautiful screen that the iPhone 4S can't match. Even with Retina Display, the iPhone 4S screen is simply too small for a lot of people.

Flash on the 8 MP HD camera. Like the Galaxy S II, the Droid Bionic has a flash on the back camera. Unlike the iPhone 4S. Simply unacceptable of Apple to not be including a flash on the iPhone 4S camera.

More info
Dock. The Droid Bionic has an optional dock that lets you use a keyboard and mouse with it, just like you're using a regular computer. This is more functionality than the iPhone 4S could give you because the iPhone 4S doesn't have much in the way of editing documents or spreadsheets. With this, the Droid Bionic almost becomes a replacement for a netbook or laptop. Sweet!

Although it's a bit larger than an iPhone 4S, it manages to pack a lot more into it's package. It's the slimmest and lightest phone with 4G LTE and a dual-core processor.

If I had to get a phone on Verizon, this is the one I'd get.

Apple iPhone 4S

Mike says:

uh, i have an android. I want to strap explosives to it because its horrible. shitty screen shitty interface. I disagree with your article and think you are 110% wrong. Actually you are 1000% wrong. HTC = SHIT

Louis says:

iPhones are outdates faster = FALSE
My release date iPhone 3Gs is still very good, and not laggy. The HTC Hero (as old) my friend haves is laggy as hell, and doesn't even get new updates.
I still get all the Apple updates and still experience more than acceptable speed. My iPhone 3Gs is still worth 300 euro on eBay here! The old HTC Hero is worth maybe 50 euro on eBay.
I also have a friend with a Galaxy SII, the screen is (VERY) nice, everything is fast BUT I just hate the interface! I just can't get used to it (He gave it to me for 1 week, because he went on holiday). Android needs to become more user friendly and better optimized. What's the point of a fast CPU if it isn't used optimally?! Apps?! You'll never find so many apps as on the App Store.

I enjoy an iPhone more than any other Android phone, it's just feels better.
BTW I was totally anti Apple, until I had an iPhone in my hands. I'm still a little anti Apple, but they make the best smartphone imo.

Bchilds says:

The real problems with android is the operating system. I've had like 5/6 different android phone all of them had glitches that I could stand. Having a powerful phone is cool but half of the stuff that they claim makes the phone so good doesn't work half of the time. I sold my phone and got me an iPhone 4s and at first the phone was just okay but I swear the phone gets better everyday as I learn more and more what it is capable of. The apps for the phone only make this a better choice over the s2.

love 4 quality says:

android is just a second hand ios that apple sell it to google and sence then they are trying to make a better one, but at speed and performance and simple user IOs rules, the reviewer it really not know the ios well because is probably afrayd of evolution, srry but this is the truth!!! yet the price at the iphone is always higher and i cannot aford a new one, so i always buy a sh one, yet, the price confirm the quality, that android phones will never had, not untill now!!

sam says:

baby baby baby baby sam

Samsung Galaxy S II

Darkshoot says:

Pfftt.. Samsung Galaxy S2 or other android phones is wayyyy better than iphone because Iphone is so boring as hell just like an ipod touch and Android phones has more freedom than iphone unless you have to jailbreak it (jailbreak gives you more lag) HTC sense = Beauty

JayRoe111 says:

I like the galaxy sII the best. iPhones suck they don’t have micro SD card slots, removable batteries, fully functional blutooth and more. All of those features are standard on android. Apple think they still own your iPhone and that you should use it their way or no way. Of course you could jailbreak your iphone but that doesn’t remove all apples stupid restrictions. Android can do so much more than even a jailbrocken iPhone.

I also hate it when people say that the iPhone has more apps than android, thats not true. Android has multiple app stores not just the android market and people who say iphone has more apps only count the android market. Because apple are so restrictive they will not allow other app stores.

xoMANDAxo says:

They say the world is gonna end December 2012, so all of this doesnt matter!! Lol...but Im a droider..my husband is trying to get me to get me to bite into the apple but I have learn from Adams mistakes!

Jason says:

Bought an Iphone 4s and returned it 24 hours later. Battery life SUCKS, even with syncing and location features turned off. Turning those features off nearly defeats the purpose of spending that much on a high end phone, IMO. Siri is extremely flaky- took me 5 times to get it to correctly see that I was looking for the AT&T store in my city. Bought a Galaxy SII and am very happy with it. I actually like the Android interface better, anyway. The apple "let us lead you by the hand" approach was great when I was learning computers on my IIC 25 years ago, but I prefer a more open-ended approach now. Some of the iOS apps really are cool, but I find there's plenty on Android Market to suit my needs.

Baj says:

So the major complaint from ifans is that android is buggy? It must be user error, I work in wireless and the only time people come in to complain about "bugs" are if the phone is defective (which happens to ALL manufacturers) or it is user error. If you are too dumb to use android, please do not procreate. The iPhone is old news with a couple of new bandaids on it, and Siri is a joke, android (and windows) has had similar things for years. I just told my android phone to remind me about a date and to call my friend while typing this. Then it gave me voice directions to the nearest apple store to laugh at you people. I had an iphone 3g and that was the last iphone that stood a chance to beat the competition.

Will Android take over the world?

What's going to happen in the next few years? The Android phones have been getting stronger and stronger, and more and more popular. Apple's newest iPhone 4S isn't any better than the best Android phones. Microsoft is on the right track with Windows Phone 7, but nobody really seems to care. Apple iPhones are still the standard by which other phones are judged, but that could change.

Is Android going to be the de-facto standard by which other phones are judged?

GarciaGadget predicts:

Yes. By 2014, Apple iPhone will not be the standard by which other phones are judged.

I, don't know!!! Steve Jobs is gone now...maybe the android is the winner!

JMaltman predicts:

Competition in the gadget world is a good thing. Anything Apple brings to the table, the legion of Android hardware and developers will bring it to the table in no time. And they continue to innovate on their own, and collectively much faster than Apple can manage. They'll both exist, with Android ominant and Apple with a stronger marker share than they do in the computer world and solidas ever following.

banana231 predicts:

Yea it will if Apple is not gonna come up with some crazy top notch gsuper genius revolutionary idea

Bought a white iphone 4s after a long research and im already full of remorse, day 2. No review really said what it feels like holding a 140 gram thing in your hand all the time. Siri is the biggest hype in the history of mankind. useless - it is no secretary as some newspaper articles wrote. Recently met one journalist - one of her first questions was about how apple products are doing - it was a casual conversation about other things. Her question was out of place. I get a feel that apple has heavily "invested" in the media. Cultivating friendships, promotions etc. I yearn to get my samsung galaxy and my bb 9780 back. I had written somewhere supporting the paid apps. I was wrong. I cant be in a situation where everything is paid 0.99 dollars or more. Samsung which seem to concentrate solely on R&D, cost reduction etc, is rather poor in marketing. it's products are splendid. Better than apple, sony etc in dollar to dollar quality and features. After a higher end galaxy (from galaxy wonder onwards) with android, Blackberry is the next best experience. ( Disclaimer - Havent tried lg, motorola, sony etc. )

the iphone 4s is a very lightly tweaked iphone 4 which is basically a revamped iphone 1, apple need to move forward instead of trying to redesign the wheel
