The basic coverage that comes with the IPhone is a 1 year warranty and 90 days technical support. The coverage is mainly for if the phone stops working. It does not cover accidental damage to the phone including dropping the phone and cracking the screen or immersion in water. Also, loss or theft is not covered on the phone either.

If you are a person that takes perfect care of your things and doesn't drop anything then buying an extended warranty for your phone may be a waste of money. However, you can get insurance up to two years so this would cover the phone breaking on its own as well. Depending on how long you normally wait between phone purchases may play into your decision to get additional coverage.

Personally, my wife and I are upgrading from the Motorola Razr phones. We have plastic cases on the phone for a good reason. Both of us have dropped the phone on the ground more times that we can count. My wife has a small crack on the window of her phone although it still works. Luckily, neither of us has dropped the phone in the toilet yet, but I do have friends that have done that. As you can see, getting insurance is a no brainer for us. We tend to be a little rough on the phones even if it is unintentional. She hasnt thrown her phone at me yet, but I'm sure she has wanted too :)

If you have kids it is a good idea to get the insurance too. Whether or not the phones are for the kids, I have seen alot of adults let their very small children play with their phones while riding around in a shopping cart at the store. If you do this, what is the chance of your child dropping your brand new IPhone.

Ok, so if you have decided to get IPhone insurance, now you need to figure out who you are going purchase the coverage through. Will it be through Apple Care or another third party company?

AppleCare+ is the the extended warranty that is available through Apple when purchasing the IPhone. As I mentioned earlier, the phone comes with one year of hardware support and 90 days of technical support. Purchasing the upgraded warranty gives you two years of hardware support and two years of technical support.

Hardware support includes the Iphone, battery, and the earbuds that come with it. You are allowed two hardware incidents for accidental damage. Once you have used the two incidents then the hardware coverage ends on the device. Each hardware event is $49. Technical support or software support for the IPhone includes support for Apple branded applications such as Safari, Mail, and Itunes, questions on connecting to networks, and using the IOS (operating system) and icloud.

Applecare+ must be purchased within 30 days of the date that you purchased your new phone and the term ends 24 months from the purchase date. I have had salesmen tell me that it has to be purchased at the time you buy your phone, but that is absolutely not true.

The cost of AppleCare+ is $99 for two years.

The advantage of buying this is that you are getting the warranty and service from the manufacturer. You can call Apple's technical support and get answers when you need them from Apple experts. I have used this for my son's IPod touch and was very satisfied with their technical support. If you are having a hardware issue, then you can mail the phone or take in to a store. They offer express replacement of the phone if necessary.

This disadvantage of using them is that you are limited to the two hardware events for accidental damage. Once you have had your second event, that portion of hardware service is terminated.

IPhone extended warranty programs are available through third party vendors. The advantage of going through a third party is that you can get more coverage for the same or less cost. Two popular vendors providing extended warranty coverage are GoCare and SquareTrade. These companies provide coverage that include damage to to dropping, immersion in water, cracks, extended warranty and technical support. The limits on the number of claims is also greater. One bad thing about the IPhone is that there are alot of them that end up being stolen. There is a way to track your Iphone, but smart theives know how to turn off the location features. A friend where I work had an IPhone stolen from his son. He tried to track it, but it was turned off pretty quickly and he never recovered it. The two companies I mentioned above provide great coverage for damaged phones, but dont have coverage in case the phone is lost or stolen. Two companies that I have found that do provide this coverage are ProtectMePlans and Worth Ave Group. Some of the other coverages that GoCare and SquareTrade provide are not offered, but loss the advantage of having coverage if the phone is stolen may be more important to you.
