iPhone or Droid: the Great Debate

The Debate

It all happened during a fishing trip last weekend. My father and his best friend like to argue, so when they got new phones it was natural for them to go into a debate about which one's better. My dad's friend had an iPhone 3g and we just changed cell phone plans so my dad got the Motorola Dorid X. Since I had the most expertise in gadgets, I decided to help them resolve the conflict by carefully examining the phones and their features during the trip. Here's what I found out:

First Impressions: Motorola Droid

Since I never used the Droid before, I decided to give it the first look. Despite having a ton of features I was easily able to do any task without the help of the manual. It was well designed: thin, light, big HD screen and the buttons were well placed. I was a little dissapointed that it didn't have the slide-out keyboard which was included in the original droid, but the multi-touch on-screen keyboard worked well enough because the size of the screen allowed it to have a good-sized keyboard. On thee back I noticed that it had 2 microphones and an 8MP camera with a flash which made me want to try them out immediately. When I did, I wasn't dissapointed. The sound and picture quality was really good.

First Impressions: Apple iPhone

After examining the Droid, I took a look at the iPhone. As with all Apple products, it was very easy to use and had a ton of cool features. The on-screen keyboard was more comfortable than I originaly expected, just like with the Droid. In general, the design was clean, simple and, most importantly, functional. I also liked the materials that were used when making this phone, because sometimes a phone is made of marerials that make it look and feel very cheap, but this wasn't the case here. Although It was noticebly thicker than the Droid and the screen was smaller, it was still pretty thin and I thought that the screen was good enough because I could see everything clearly.

Comparison of the main software and hardware features

type=text

  • Operating System and features: Both operating systems are equally easy to use and very functional and are loaded with features such as the GPS system. The difference to me was that, while the Android (Droid's OS) looked a little nicer and more like a computer's Operating System, the iPhone 3g's iOS has more apps made for it. At the end of the day, I had to give this category to the iPhone's iOS because it has better app support and has been around longer (which, come to think of it, is probably a big reason why it has better app support) .

  • Physical Specs: The Droid takes this category. It has an 8MP camera to iPhone 3g's 2MP, a 4.3'' HD screen to iPhone's 3.5'' (although some might find this as a downside b/c it makes the Droid quite big for a phone); 9.9mm thickness to iPhone's 12.3mm; iPhone 3g's battery has a better stand-by and talk time: 300h vs 220h and 10h vs 8h

And the Winner Is...

type=text

It was definately not easy. Both phones are loaded with a ton of features and apps. But after carefull analysis I finally had a winner. The iPhone is the better phone as of today because its software is more polished and it has more apps made for it. However, because of the Droid's superior specs, it has more potential. I think that in a couple of months it should catch up to the iPhone in the app department. Since when you buy a phone you're looking to use it for at least 2 years (because of the contract), I decided to name the Droid X the winner because by then it should catch up to the iPhone and overtake it with time to spare.

I finally upgraded to an Android from a Blackberry while waiting for the iPhone to become available to Verizon customers. I'm still waiting, and the Android is ok in the meantime.
