iPhone Keyboard

This guide is a colection of the best iPhone tips and tricks including typing & productuctivity shortcuts, customizations, performance enhancements, troubleshooting and much more.

This iPhone guide will share with you the tips and tricks on the iPhone keyboard. Hope that this guide will enhance your typing experience.

Tip #1 - Make the keyboard bigger

In most of the built-in Applications on the iPhone you can simply enlarge the keyboard by rotating the iPhone 90 degrees to a landscape view. This is perfect for typing with two thumbs.

Tip #2 - Double tap the space bar

At the end of a sentence you would normally tap the punctuation key, then press the period button and then the space bar before typing a new sentence. There is a quicker way to do it. Just double tap the space bar and then period button will appear automatically.

Tip #3 - iPhone caps lock

On a computer you can hold down the shift key while typing to insert capital letters. On the iPhone, you can hold the shift key (big arow ley) too but it is too tedious to do so. Luckily the iPhone keyboard has a hidden caps lock. Simply double-tap the shift key and the key will turn blue. Now all the letters you type will be in uppercase.
Note: You can turn this feature On or Off via "Settings > General > Keyboard".

Tip #4 - Hold the key for extra keys

The true power of a onscreen or virtual keyboard is that it's not static. The iPhone keyboard layout will change between applications and individual keys can house extra features. Holding down a key for a few seconds will reveal if it has any hidden extras, simply slide & release to make a selection.

Tip #5 - Self learning dictionary

The iPhone comes with a great built-in automatic dictionary that can recognize names from your contacts list, automatically correct spellng and suggest word completiions.
The dictionary can learn new words too If you type a word or name that the dictionary doesn't know and dismiss any suggested replacement, the dictionary will remember that word for future use.

Tip #6 - Reset the keyboard dictionary

A learning dictionary is a great idea, as long as it's learning the right words. If you or someone else has typed a bunch of words you wish the dictionary wouldn't keey suggesting you can reset the custom dictionary.
Go to "Settings > General", scroll down and tap "Reset", then tap "Reset Keyboard Dictionary" and press the "Reset Dictionary" button.

Tip #7 - Magnify and Edit

If you make a mistake when typing a message you don't have to delete every word back to the mistake. Instead you can tap and hold your finger on the screen to bring up the magnifying glass. Move your finger around to position the insertion point, and release to edit the text. When you are finished, simply tab near the end of the message to continue.

Tip #8 - Spell Check

In addition to automatically replacing common misspellings the iPhone will put red dots under words it can't recognize.
Tap on the words to see any suggested replacements and tap to select one or tap somewhere else on the screen to continue without replacing the word.

Tip #9 - Turn keyboard click sound off

By default the iPhone plays a "type writer" sound every time you press a key. At first this can be fun, but after a while you may find it annoying. To turn it off go to "Settings > Sounds", then scroll down to "Keyboard Clicks" and slide the switch to OFF.

Tip #10 - International keyboard

The iPhone was designed to be used all over the world and has many built-in language and keyboard options.

To change the default language, go to "Settings > General > International" and tap "Language", then make your selection.

To add extra keyboards, go to "Settings > General > International" and tap "Keyboards" then switch on the keyboards you want. The next time you bring up a keyboard, a new globe key will allow you to switch between keyboards.
