iPhone applications - travel tools you should download before you visit Australia
Over the last year the number of applications for i-phone and i-pod's for travelers has exploded. Many of them are free but are they worth the space they take up on your device?
Earlier this year I took my brand new iPhone on a 2 month trip to Europe. I was wondering how useful it would be and if I should really bother taking it - Boy am I glad I did! It proved an invaluable travel tool. Maps, language tools, currency tools, guided walks and so much more. So that gave me an idea... I wonder what apps there are for travelling in Australia?
For the last few weeks I have been downloading and trialling a variety of Australian apps and listed below are the ones that I think will make a helpful addition on your trip to Australia.

For the last few weeks I have been downloading and trialling a variety of Australian apps and listed below are the ones that I think will make a helpful addition on your trip to Australia.
Transport Apps
i-Phone applications that help with public transport in Australia
For Sydney
Tripview - A great app for using public transport in Sydney. Tripview has maps for bus train and ferry and an easy to use search function for locating services from a particular location. Tripview Light, the free version, offers the same information but without the ability to save your regular trips and is probably perfect for the traveller. The app uses Google maps and has driving and walking instructions as well.
Link express - I was sure that nothing could be better than Tripview... well I was wrong. Link express is great. It may be even more useful for travelers than Tripview because it includes the ability to search by address and landmark not just station or bus route number. It also has an option to search for wheelchair friendly services. Link Express is free so check it out and see which you prefer. Either will be fine for your visit to Sydney.
For Melbourne
TramTracker (Free) - If you are visiting Melbourne this is probably all you will need to get around town and the main attractions. It's fairly easy to use with nice clean maps. Have a look at Tram tracker on the Yarra Trains website.
Other States
There are metro apps for Perth and Brisbane and also a good app called Go Brisbane but these all cost about $3.99 each. Unless you are going to be staying in one of these cities for a considerable amount of time I would not bother with these.
Australian flight - This app lets you check flight from all Australian airports for $4 or there is a free version that only shows flights for the next 5 days.

iPod or iPhone you can use either as a travel tool
Tour Guide and Tour Planning Apps
These applications are great for itinerary planning
OZtralia TV - This app features lots of video content on a huge variety of places in Australia. The videos are short but good quality. Nothing to lose as it's free!
Sydney Australia - If you are heading to Sydney this is worth downloading before you leave home. It has great must see and do lists and the attractions listed include all the contact details, including phone number, websites and email address making it easy to make further enquiries. ImageS and maps are high quality and it's very easy to use.
Tourism Queensland - Another great free app that is useful for anyone visiting Queensland. This app helps you locate attractions and accommodation around the state. You can save your favourites and the maps are easy to read.
Outback NT - If you are planning a visit to Kakadu, Darwin or Uluru this free app is worth downloading particularly as you do not need to have an internet connection to use it. It includes maps, listings for what to see, where to stay and what to eat.
South Australian Tourism Commission - has developed a variety of free appS including a city tour of Adelaide, the Fleurieu Way Guided GPS Tour and apps for the various events held there such as WOMADelaide and the Fringe Festival.

Eating out apps
Helping you find a great meal on your holiday.
Food Spotting - This app uses photos to show you meals nearby. Photos can be added by anyone. Also search by location or the type of food you want. Find the best burgers, steaks or whatever takes your fancy. I find Urbanspoon a little easier to navigate but the photo feature here is really cool.
Beer Lovers Guide to Australia - While not free this app is a good buy for serious beer lovers. With reviews of over 500 beers and 200 beer venues. At $5 it's less than a beer in many bars.
Podcasts for visitors to Australia
Guided tours, walks and more
- Heritage walk of the Rocks - Sydney University
- The Wine Regions of Victoria By Tourism Victoria - 240 Victorian wineries,
iPhone cases
Other useful applications
Cheap Parking This free app helps you find the cheapest parking in all major cities across Australia and New Zealand.
World Nomads Australian Language Guide Yes we speak English in Australia but we use quite a bit of slang and this free app will give you the words and definitions for slang we actually use.
