iPhone 3Gs insurance - TOP TIPS!

Buying iPhone 3Gs insurance from an independent company is mostly overlooked by the average consumer. Why? Because they dont really know any better. O2 has a monopoly on their product, and people arent usually aware that there are much better deals to be had! Did you know that a simple search for 'iPhone 3Gs insurance' returns over 3,000,000 results? The number of people selling great products is astounding.

I spent a good few days researching on google trying to fnd the best product out there, and the best I could come up with was a product backed by Equity Redstar. This product comes without a 12-month contract, and can be cancelled at any point on a monthly basis. It can be found at http://insureit.2u.co.uk/iPhoneInsurance/ and will cost you £8.24 per month.

In todays day and age, who would have thought you can get something from you banks for free!?. Yes, its possible to partly or even fully insure your iPhone 3Gs through your premium bank account. Lloyds TSB are a good example of a bank who are currently insuring not only yours, but your partners phone absolutely free. Crazy hey!

But, there are obviously a few catches involved when putting through an insurance claim. You need to check firstly what the policy maximum payout will be. In some cases a new iPhone 3Gs will costs upwards of £600 which means it is very unlikely that Lloyds will pay the full amount. Secondly you need to check what the excess will be. Usually it will be up around £100 which is quite expensive and will eat into your maximum policy claim which is likely to be alot lower than the £600. Not ideal, but still pretty good for free!

The other negative is that the banks will make you work for this money! Be prepared to jump through hoops and produce every piece of paperwork humanly possible! You are not likely to have a phone within 48 hrs.

Are you a home owner? If so, then you should have home insurance. Once this is established you need to give them a call to check if the policy covers you for personal items damaged/lost/stolen etc etc outside the boundaries of your home. In most cases I think you will pleasantly suprised!. This type of cover is normally called C&PE or All Risks.

There are always variables between the different insurance companies, so you need to check the following with them:

1. Check what your maximum payout will be - important as we have already established that a new iPhone 3Gs will cost £600!
2. Check how a claim will affect your 'no claims bonus'. You can pay a little extra each month and receive No claims bonus portection. Recommended!
3. Check what your excess will be, and way up the value in paying a bit more each month to reduce the excess.

This type of cover wouldn't remove the risk of unauthorised calls, but if you put on the phone lock and SIM card lock, the risk of someone else using your airtime is significantly reduced. Not a bad call.
