iPhone Jailbreak

What is iPhone Jailbreak?

This is a lens about iPhone Jailbreak. What is Jailbreak, you ask? iPhone Jailbreak is what you do to your iPhone to liberate it from the limitations that Apple places on it. The best iPhone Jailbreak software is always free, and Jailbreak is available for the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

Why Jailbreak iPhone? Surely, if you are an iPhone owner, you have wondered, "Why doesn't my iPhone have [insert feature here]?" Well, even though there is an App Store with plenty of apps, there are still many things that Apple does not allow you to do with your iPhone, either because of their own business reasons or to maintain the integrity of their design.

Luckily, there are many iPhone owners who reject Apple's stranglehold on the iPhone and have resorted to iPhone Jailbreak to FREE their iPhones and unleash the true potential of our touchscreen devices. Have no doubt: iPhone Jailbreak is a people's movement!

iPhone Jailbreak Pros & Cons

Reasons to Jailbreak + Reasons Not to Jailbreak

iPhone Jailbreak Pros:

  1. Jailbreak gives you the ability to modify your iPhone in virtually any way. As long as a developer can code it and the hardware supports it, then you can literally do whatever you want to your iPhone.

  2. Jailbreak is free.

  3. Jailbreak is about consumers taking control of their devices. You paid for your iPhone, why shouldn't you have the right to modify it?

  4. Jailbreaking your iPhone is the first step to unlocking your iPhone. Unlocked iPhones can be used on any cellphone carrier network.

iPhone Jailbreak Cons:

  1. Jailbreak voids your iPhone warranty. If you take your Jailbroken iPhone to the Apple Store Genius Bar, they reserve the right to deny you service under your warranty.

  2. Jailbreak can sometimes, though rarely, spread viruses to your iPhone. There have only been a handful of viruses that have spread through the iPhone, but most if not all of them were on Jailbroken iPhones.

  3. Jailbreak can sometimes be buggy. Since by Jailbreaking you are taking your iPhone software into your own hands, there can sometimes (though not often) be issues that are not common to normal iPhone users, such as your phone randomly turning off or settings randomly resetting to their default configuration.

  4. With a jailbroken iPhone, you miss out on iPhone updates delivered through iTunes, since if you update your phone the jailbreak will be removed and your iPhone will be restored to factory settings.

iPhone Jailbreak FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Jailbreak

What can I do with a jailbroken iPhone?
Jailbreak lets you modify your iPhone in many ways. Some of my favorite modifications include being able to use FaceTime over 3G, hiding factory apps from the home screen, tethering my laptop to my iPhone's Internet connection (for free), and making my iPhone lock screen useful with the Lockinfo iPhone app (my favorite Jailbreak app).

Does Jailbreak have an "App Store"?
Yes. While you can still use the regular App Store when you jailbreak iPhone, you will also have access to Cydia and Installer, two stores that give you access to free and paid apps and modifications for jailbroken iPhones.

How do I Jailbreak my iPhone?
To Jailbreak iPhone, visit iPhone Jailbreak: The Ultimate Guide and find the resource pertaining to your iPhone model and version. Then, follow instructions. Generally, jailbreaking an iPhone involves downloading a software that jailbreaks your iPhone at the click of a button or two.

Is iPhone Jailbreak free?
Yes. iPhone jailbreak software should always be free. If someone tries to charge you for iPhone jailbreak software, the chances are that they are trying to take advantage of you.

Is it legal to Jailbreak my iPhone?
Yes. Despite some people's misconceptions, jailbreaking is completely legal. Afterall, your iPhone is your own property and you can do what you want with it. In fact, a federal court in the US ruled that jailbreaking an iPhone is 100% legal.

Does Jailbreak void my iPhone warranty?
Although Jailbreak is legal, it does void your warranty with Apple. When you Jailbreak, you are modifying your iPhone in a way that Apple does not approve, therefore they reserve the right to not cover your damages under warranty if your iPhone is Jailbroken.

What is the best iPhone Jailbreak software?
The best jailbreak software depends on what model and version you are trying to Jailbreak. See my iPhone Jailbreak Guide to find the jailbreak software that is right for you.

Is Jailbreaking iPhone the same as Unlocking iPhone?
Jailbreaking is not the same as Unlocking. Unlocking an iPhone means to free it to work on any wireless carrier. To Unlock an iPhone, you first need to Jailbreak it. However, they are not the same thing.

Can I update my Jailbroken iPhone?
If you update your Jailbroken iPhone through iTunes, the iPhone will be restored to its default configuration and you will lose any settings that were a result of Jailbreak. You can Jailbreak your iPhone again only if there is a software available for the version you have updated to. Usually people with the most recent iPhone version must wait several weeks or months before third party developers ("hackers") figure out how to jailbreak the new iPhone version. This is why some people call Jailbreak "a cat and mouse game" between Apple and Jailbreak developers.

Can Jailbreak ruin my iPhone?
Although I have never heard of jailbreak completely ruining an iPhone, you should consider that a risk. There is no telling what Apple might do with future iPhone updates to disable iPhones with Jailbreak (although deliberately ruining customers' iPhones would certainly garner considerable bad press).

I tried Jailbreaking my iPhone and now it is acting strange/not turning on. What do I do?
Don't panic. Chances are that your iPhone just needs to be put in "Recovery Mode" and everything will be fine. To put an iPhone in Recovery Mode, first turn it off. If it's already off, press the Home button and hold it, while simultaneously plugging your iPhone into your computer's USB port. In a few seconds, you should see a screen that either has a white iPhone connector and the iTunes icon or (for older versions) a yellow triangle that says "Please Connect to iTunes." Once you see this, let go of the home button and open iTunes if it did not already open automatically. iTunes will tell you that your iPhone is in Recovery Mode. Click OK, then click Restore and everything should go back to normal.

you said that jailbreak voids your warranty, thats not totally true, since jailbreak is reversible , so you can always restore to a stock firmware, you will not loose any waranty

I have had my iphone3g jailbroken for sometime now (so I could use it on o2 and not Orange), but I am due to pass it on to my wife as I am getting a company mobile. I want to restore the factory settings, so my wife can start a fresh. If I restore the factory settings, will I lose the network lock as well as the jailbreak? I am not bothered about losing the jailbreak, I would just like to keep it unlocked to any network. Any suggestion of speaking to Orange and paying £20 for the unlock code is a no no, I might as well speak to a brick wall... Can anybody assist me??

    Selenaa,

If all goes well, jailbreaking should not cause you to lose any service with your carrier. If it does, simply do a Restore in iTunes.
