Turn your iPod into an iPhone!

Ranked #15,331 in Computers & Electronics, #307,786 overall

Want to make calls and send sms with your iPod? Now you can...

This lens will take you throw the process from start to finish to make your simple iPod turn to a Phone, allowing you make and receive calls and sms.
Has you may know the iPhone and the iPod Touch are much similar and are almost the same device, the greatest advantage of the iPhone versus the iPod is the fact that the iPhone brings with it the "Phone" part, after seeing this lens you'll see that you can bring that "Phone" part to your iPod touch with ease.
This will have nothing to do with voip apps or anything like that, you will actually be able to use your iPod with a sim card and use it like an actual phone, for that we will be using an adapter created by Yosion's, the Apple Peel 520 or the tPhone, created by SINA.
Before proceding, we will present both of this apparatus, so you can decide for yourself which one is the best.

The Apple Peel 520

apple-peelChina based Yosion Technology, which is based in Shenzhen, has developed the Apple Peel 520 protective case made of silicon-rubber, available online with a one-year warranty.

It is powered by Infineon chip. What more, it comes with:
-indication of signal strength
-dock connector
-removable 800mAh battery (rated for 4.5 hours of talk time and five days on standby)
-SIM card slot
-Vibration motor
-Speaker on the top to hear the call
-Mic build in

Issues (as on 14th September 2010) :
-Impossible to adjust Voice level
-Quirky SMS delivery
-(Probably) unable to identify missed calls.

But I belive that those are small issues compared with the great reward.

The tPhone

tphoneYet another Chinese solution by a Chinese company SINA which has hit the market on 12th August 2010, the tPhone is going to convert you iPod touch into an iPhone. It is expected to cost about $103 and comes with:
-Dock connector
-SIM adapter
-Mini USB for power charging
-1200 mAh battery
-Plastic Case

Cons :
-Slightly more expensive than Apple Peel 520
-Super duper thick

Jailbreaking your iPhone...

ipod-jailbreakmeThere is one thing you need to do in order to get the apps for the iPod that will allow you to make calls and receive sms with it, cause besides the hardware there is also needed the software, you will need to jailbreak your iPod touch, allowing it that way to use apps that are not from apple, permiting the adaptors to install the required apps.

-So, what is jailbreaking?
Jailbreaking is the process used to open the software of an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad to allow the user greater access to the device to install non-Apple-approved software.

While the upside of jailbreaking is more control over what is installed on a device, and that it sometimes allows users to do things Apple doesn't approved of, it can also cause problems, including data corruption and allowing access to malicious code.

Apple does not support devices that have been damaged due to jailbreaking and may consider them out of warranty.

In July 2010, the U.S. Library of Congress declared that jailbreaking is a right of all iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad owners, settling the matter.

Remember that the jailbreaking process is reversible, wich means you can "un"jailbreak your iPod if you want.

-How do you jailbreak your own iPod Touch?

There are many ways to do it, the easyest one is by using your iPod's built in web browser to go to the site JailbreakMe.com. Once you're there, all you have to do is activate the jailbreak program by moving the slide button over. The program does the rest of the work!
