Funky iPod socks and covers

Ranked #4,995 in Computers & Electronics, #101,459 overall

What kind of sock, cover or skin do you put on your iPod?

Whatever type of Apple iPod you've got, buying it is just the first step.

Next up, you've got to be able to protect it and keep it looking as good as the day you first got it out of its box. Luckily you've got plenty of help on this front - and that's where this lens comes in.

I'm going to introduce you to the wonderful world of socks, covers, cases and skins. You're about to discover that a protective cover doesn't have to be dull and functional - it can actually cover your Apple iPod with pride and tell the world something about its owner as well.

Cover your Classic in shocking pink. Encase your Nano in solid aluminum. You can even holster your iPod if you really want to. The most important thing is to keep your iPod safe and use the right cover or case for the right occasion.

With plenty of choices to suit everyone with every budget, this is truly an eye opening journey into the world of the iPod accessory. So strap yourself in and enjoy the ride.

How functional do you need your iPod cover to be?

The first requirement of any kind of cover - whether you have an iPod Classic, Nano or Shuffle - is to protect it. That's a given.

Beyond that, in order to buy the best possible cover that you personally will love, you need to think about how you use your iPod. If you tend to use it most while you're relaxing at home (as opposed to using it while you're on the move) then a nice sock to keep it in might well fit the bill. You could get a hard case as well to put it in while transporting it from place to place, to save it getting scratched in your bag.

But if you like to listen to music during your walk to work each day then you might want something a little more user friendly. Check out the cases that are designed to be clipped or slid onto your belt.

The great thing about iPods is that you can buy a whole selection of different cases and socks to keep yours in. If you're feeling fun, stick it in a Spongebob sock. If you're feeling serious, use your solid black inpenetrable case for an air of mystery.

The choice is yours.

FYI, my partner's iPod currently has two cases, but I feel the collection will grow - I'm currently thinking about knitting a unique sock for her birthday... the only trouble being I can't actually knit. Maybe I'll rely on one of those French knitting dolls and go from there.

Covering your iPod Classic in style

The 160gb iPod Classic is the model my partner has. It's the 6th generation silver model, and it's currently housed in an aluminum case.

It's a good solid case, and it certainly protects the iPod from knocks and scratches (and me blundering around in the dark during the night, when it's accidentally been left on the floor).

Check out the transparent hard case below; there are a couple of other good options too. I think it's important to have a fairly robust case though - if only to protect your iPod from clumsy people like me. Makes sense.

The ultimate iPod case for big budgets!

You might want to save this one for your Christmas list (assuming you have a rich relative that is). Very impressive if you like this kind of thing. Personally I think I'd be scared to take my iPod out in an 18ct gold case!

Waterproof iPod cases for holidays and going out and about

It can be hard to leave your iPod behind sometimes. So why not buy yourself a case that will enable you to take your iPod swimming with you?

Even if swimming isn't your bag it would be nice to wear your iPod out and about without having to worry about what the rain might be doing to it.

Here's a selection of the best cases that will protect your iPod come rain or shine. My personal favorite? The OtterBoxes.
