The Coming War in Iran: How Can It Be Stopped?

Just as previously happened before the beginning of the war in Iraq, the United States government is talking up the possibility of a war.

Previously it kept insisting war was coming in Iraq; this time it says war is likely with Iran.

The United States (or, more specifically, the Bush administration and its supporters) is rejecting serious efforts at negotiation, refusing to meet representatives of Iran, ignoring advice that Iran is NOT breaking international law.

"Don't Let Bush Trick Us" video - Text and Links

Speech by Rep. Maxine Waters

"We come to the floor tonight to resist efforts by this administration to paint war with Iran as a necessary next step in our so-called war on terror. A vast majority of foreign policy and military experts agree that war with Iran would be a colossal error. ... Administration officials this week have been turning up the volume on Iran."

"A further sign that the U.S. may be headed for war is Admiral Fallon's resignation. In the aftermath of the disastrous invasion of Iraq, there has been discussion within media and in the military that senior military officers should have resigned when they knew the White House to be heading to a reckless war in Iraq. [a reckless AND illegal war]"

"There are experts that are indeed worried that the same playbook that was used to bring this country into the Iraq war is now being used toward Iran. The Administration is pushing suspect inteligence."

- Rep. Maxine Waters

IRAN FACT: National Intelligence Estimate - Iran NOT Working on Nuclear Weapons

This NIE OF 2008 was the consensus view of ALL 16 U.S. INTELLIGENCE SERVICES

A Miracle: Honest Intel on Iran Nukes
December 4, 2007

The main points of the NIE:

"We judge that in fall 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program...

"We assess with moderate confidence Tehran has not restarted its nuclear weapons program as of mid-2007.

"We do not have sufficient intelligence to judge confidently whether Tehran is willing to maintain the halt of its nuclear weapons program indefinitely...

"We judge with moderate confidence Iran probably would be technically capable of producing enough highly enriched uranium sometime during the 2010-2015 time frame.

"We judge with high confidence that Iran will not be technically capable of producing and reprocessing enough plutonium for a weapon before about 2015."

Having reached these conclusions, it is not surprising that the NIE's authors make a point of saying up front (in bold type), "This NIE does not [italics in original] assume that Iran intends to acquire nuclear weapons."

Iran Halted Nuke Program Years Ago, Say U.S. Intell. Agencies (video)

Interview with CAP's Cirincione on CNN

Iran Halted Nuke Program Years Ago - CAP's Cirincione on CNN

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2007/12/nuclear_shock_therapy.html Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Joseph Cirincione tells CNN that six weeks after President George Bush threatened Iran with "World War III," and nearly six years after he declared Iran part of an "axis of evil," a new National Intelligence Estimate says Iran ended its nuclear weapons work four years ago. In an abrupt turnabout from previous estimates, the intelligence agencies of the executive branch conclude in the NIE that "Tehran's decision to halt its nuclear weapons program suggest it is less determined to develop nuclear weapons than we have been judging since 2005," adding, "We do not know whether [Iran] currently intends to develop nuclear weapons." www.AMERICANPROGRESS.org

IRAN FACT: Iran Is Complying With Nuclear Treaties

UN satisfied with Iran's N-progress
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says he is satisfied with progress Iranian authorities have made with IAEA in their nuclear program.
IAEA chief warns against military action to solve Iranian nuclear issue
Visiting UN nuclear watchdog chief Mohamed ElBaradei on Monday warned against a military action to solve the Iranian nuclear issue, the Egyptian official MENA news agency reported.

In an interview with Egyptian TV, ElBaradei, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said a military strike to settle the Iranian nuclear issue would complicate the situation and send the Middle East region into a vicious cycle of violence.

ElBaradei warned that Iran could be pushed to strive for nuclear weapons if it is hit while seeking no such weapons.
Under NNPT, Iran legally allowed to build nuclear power stations
I hate to be the one to point this out, but under the NNPT, Iran has a legal right to build nuclear power stations and to make the fuel rods for same, as long as Iran allows inspections to prove that weapons are not being built. Well, Iran HAS allowed inspections, and all 16 of the US Intelligence agencies are in total agreement that Iran is NOT building nuclear weapons.
ElBaradei: Iran not after bomb
The UN nuclear watchdog chief Mohamed ElBaradei has once again highlighted the lack of evidence to prove Iran is after a nuclear bomb.

Speaking at a session of the World Economic Forum on the Middle East, ElBaradei reiterated the International Atomic Energy Agency has no evidence that Iran is seeking to develop an atomic bomb.

"We haven't seen indications or any concrete evidence that Iran is building a nuclear weapon and I've been saying that consistently for the last five years," ElBaradei asserted.

IRAN FACT: Iran Not Supplying Iraq Insurgents

Iraq backs off allegations that Iran is behind violence
The Iraqi Government seemed to distance itself from U.S. accusations towards Iran Sunday saying it would not be forced into conflict with its Shiite neighbor.
Iraq says no hard evidence of Iran support for militia
Iraq said on Sunday it has no evidence that Iran was supplying militias engaged in fierce street fighting with security forces in Baghdad.
US confession: Weapons were not made in Iran after all
In a sharp reversal of its longstanding accusations against Iran arming militants in Iraq, the US military has made an unprecedented albeit quiet confession: the weapons they had recently found in Iraq were not made in Iran at all.

IRAN FACT: Iran never threatened to wipe Israel off the map

'Wiped off the Map' - The Rumor of the Century
Across the world, a dangerous rumor has spread that could have catastrophic implications. According to legend, Iran's president has threatened to destroy Israel, or, to quote the misquote, "Israel must be wiped off the map." Contrary to popular belief, this statement was never made.

IRAN FACT: A War with Iran Will Be About Oil

The Coming War with Iran: It's About the Oil, Stupid
The American oil wars are being launched out of weakness, not strength. The American economy is teetering and without control of the remaining oil it will collapse. There will be massive chaos in any case, when only enough oil remains for the American elite and whomever they choose to share it with.

It's not about greed any more. It's about survival. Because the leadership of this country was initially too greedy to switch from oil to solar, wind, geothermal and other renewable alternatives, it may now be too late. Had the hundreds of billions of dollars poured into the invasion and occupation of Iraq been put into alternative energy the world might have had a fighting chance. Now that is far from certain.

IRAN FACT: Coming Iran War Motivated in Part by Iran Bourse

Iran Oil Bourse to deal blow to dollar
The long-awaited Iranian Oil Bourse, a place for trading oil, petrochemicals and gas in various non-dollar currencies, will soon open. (...)

Some expert opinions hold inauguration of the bourse cold significantly devalue the greenback.
Iran's Oil Exchange Threatens
The Bush administration will never allow the Iranian government to open an oil exchange (bourse) that trades petroleum in euros. If that were to happen, hundreds of billions of dollars would come flooding back to the United States crushing the greenback and destroying the economy. This is why Bush and Co. is planning to lead the nation to war against Iran. It is straightforward defense of the current global system and the continuing dominance of the reserve currency, the dollar.

IRAN FACT: Iran War Will Be Linked With Israel Security Demands

Israel may have to take military action against Iran: Bolton
Former US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton said on Monday that Israel may have to take military action to prevent its archfoe Iran from acquiring an atomic bomb.
We'll nuke Iran - Bush promises Israel
US President George W. Bush promised Israel's opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu that the United States will join the Jewish state in a nuclear strike against Iran, Israel Radio reported today.

IRAN FACT: The Neo-Cons Are Behind the Iran War Push

Iran: The Next Neo-Con Target
Let there be no doubt: The neoconservative warriors are still in charge and are conditioning Congress, the media, and the American people for a preemptive attack on Iran.
Bolton: Striking Iran 'Is Really The Most Prudent Thing To Do'
Bolton has asserted that preventive war against Iraq "did work" and "achieved our strategic objective." Moreover, he has openly stated that the U.S. should have no interest in the well-being of Iraqis.

Bolton's unquenchable appetite for a military conflict with Iran is easy to understand, given that he cares so little about the disastrous consequences that follow from war.
Deja Vu All Over Again
In a comprehensive and frightening article, Heather Wokusch tells us that the neocons are at it again, this time getting ready for military action against Iran in the name of -- what else? -- the threat of WMD. While even France and Germany seem to be jumping on the "stop Iran" bandwagon this time, the evidence against Iran is murky at best, and, according to Wokusch, the consensus among U.S. intelligence experts is that Iran is still ten years away from having a nuclear weapon.

IRAN FACT: An Iran War Will Trigger Russian, Chinese Retaliation

Russia to double Bushehr personnel: official
Russia's nuclear constructor Atomstroiexport will nearly double its staff on the construction site of the Bushehr nuclear station Russia is building for Iran, the company's president said late Thursday.
China Rushes to Complete $100B Deal With Iran
China is hastening to complete a deal worth as much as $100 billion that would allow a Chinese state-owned energy firm to take a leading role in developing a vast oil field in Iran, complicating the Bush administration's efforts to isolate the Middle Eastern nation and roll back its nuclear development plans, according to published reports.

IRAN FACT: Terrifying Effects of a War on Iran

Russian FM warns military action on Iran 'disastrous'
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday warned that any military means to solve Iran's controversial nuclear programme would have a "disastrous" effect.

"Any forceful attempts to resolve this issue by non-peaceful means would undermine all that has been done to bring clarity into the Iranian nuclear programme," Lavrov said in a press conference with his Israeli counterpart Tzipi Livni.

He warned against attempts to undermine the International Atomic Energy Agency inspection of Tehran's programme.

"As long as the inspectors report that they have not found that there is some deviation of this programme into the military field I think it would be disastrous for us to undermine this very efficient and important process."
Blowback of Iran War Likely to be Terrible
"The great lesson that I draw from this is that when you violently intervene in the political development of another country, you can never predict what the long-term consequences will be. And most likely, although the consequences will be terrible and tragic for the target country, they will be even worse for the country that launched the intervention," said Kinzer.

"The same thing will be true if we fail to learn this lesson and launch an attack on Iran now," he added.

Constructive Alternatives to War with Iran

Can the U.S. and Iran Share the Middle East?
The question is no longer -- if it ever was -- what economic incentives are required to change Iranian behaviour. Rather, to reach a settlement with Iran that could help stabilise Iraq, prevent a Taliban resurrection in Afghanistan, reach a political deal in Lebanon and create a better climate to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the U.S. must arguably grant Iran a role in the region and begin focusing on how to influence Iranian behaviour rather than how to roll back Iranian influence.

Neither Washington nor Tehran can wish the other away. While the United States' days in Iraq may be numbered, it is not likely to leave the entire Middle East anytime soon. Nor can Washington continue to design policies and arrangements in the region based on the notion that Iran can be neglected and excluded. Sooner or later, Iran and the U.S. must learn how to share the region.

What Really Happened
Daily commentaries on latest news on Iran, Iraq, the Middle East, and the United States
Hillary Clinton's Monstrous Threat
Granted that if Iran's leaders were, for some crazy reason, to decide to launch an unprovoked nuclear attack on Israel, it would require some kind of response by the US and other nations, but is the appropriate response the slaughter of tens of millions of innocent Iranian citizens? Of course not.
The Old Drumbeat
Here we go again: anonymous briefings, dubious dossiers and claims of secret weapons. Watch out, Iran.

A shrill cacophony of Washington voices is once again attempting to ratchet up pressure on Iran over its "malign influence" in Iraq and its suspect nuclear activities. Although military options remain on hold, Bush administration officials have been briefing for the first time on possible targets inside the Islamic republic.
Rice determined not to give ground over incentives to Iran
Secretary Rice doesn't want negotiations with Iran to succeed: she wants the absolutely opposite outcome to happen.
Israel aligned with US for Iran war
Israel has tacitly aligned itself with Washington, raising the specter of a war on Iran even if it has to go 'alone with the problem'.
Secret Bush "Finding" Widens War on Iran
Six weeks ago, President Bush signed a secret finding authorizing a covert offensive against the Iranian regime that, according to those familiar with its contents, "unprecedented in its scope."
Ritter says White House preparing for war in Iran
Scott Ritter, former head of weapons inspection in Iraq who protested there were no weapons of mass destruction to justify an invasion, believes the same is true for Iran.

But there is an 80 percent chance of war with Iran, he told about 200 people Wednesday at Middlebury College as part of a series of talks facilitated by the Vermont Peace and Justice Center.

Good, informative lens. It seems we are drifting towards some kind of insane action. How is it that the decision-makers cannot see?!

Very good lens. With the recent threats by Israel, I am starting to worry that this war is really going to happen. I can't really believe it - isn't the US military stretched thin as it is?
