We should withdraw ALL our troops as soon as possible. Most military analysts estimate that would take about a year. The US occupation is the reason for much of the violence. Not to mention that the Bush administration laid the foundation for the civil war by creating a power vacuum, through de-Baathification and installing al-Maliki's Shia government. [Maliki's DAWA party and al-Hakim's Badr Brigades are closer to Iran than Muqtada al-Sadr and his Mahdi Army. So what does Bush want???]

I say how about there's more than two choices? There are options between simply "getting out of Iraq" and "staying 100 years." I don't know what the U.S. government should do, because I am not an expert in military strategy. I think (and thought in 2002 and 2003) that the U.S. military should never have invaded Iraq, and I think George W. Bush and John McCain and Hillary Clinton were wrong in supposing that the military should do so. But it is not 2002, and it is not 2003. We are not in an invasion right now, we are in an occupation, and I do not believe that either simply getting out of Iraq OR staying indefinitely in Iraq would be a good idea. I do not know what the ideal answer is.
