Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys Praise Obama's Irish Roots
For those of you who missed it, Barack Obama acknowledged in 2007 that his great-great-great grandfather had come from a tiny town in Ireland, one Moneygall in County Offaly, confirmed by church records in Ireland. Naturally, the Irish were quick to claim their long-lost son of the Auld Sod, and in April, 2008 Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys took a traditional melody and created this tribute, There's No One as Irish as Barack Obama. You can see them to the left, in a publicity still from the Ollie Hayes bar in Moneygall, after they changed their name to The Corrigan Brothers, in honor of their new deal with Universal Records.
On this lens, you'll find the lyrics to this bit of light-hearted fun as well as a video of the original version and another of the Shay Black cover of the song with additional verses. You'll also find links where you can read more about the song and the Irish folks who wrote and performed it.
Lyrics for There's No One as Irish as Barack Obama
These are the lyrics as published by the Limerick (Ireland) Leader in May, 2008. The song in the video below is a great deal longer than this, with verses added for things like his having won the White House (and still asking him to do Riverdance).O'Leary, O'Reilly, O'Hare and O'Hara
There's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama
You don't believe me
I hear you say
But Barack's as Irish
As was JFK
His granddaddy's daddy
Came from Moneygall
A small Irish village
Well known to you all
Toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a lama
There's no one as Irish
As Barack O'Bama
He's as Irish as bacon
And cabbage and stew
He's Hawaiian he's Kenyan
American too
If he succeeds
And he has a chance
I'm sure our Barack
Will do Riverdance
Toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a lama
There's no one as Irish
As Barack O'Bama

Add a little presidential cheer to your St. Patrick's Day celebrations this year with the Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys (or The Corrigan Brothers, as they are now known) song that caused such a sensation. The band is hard at work on a full album, with a release date to be determined, but you can enjoy their first single while waiting for the rest.

- The song has a very lilting tune that makes me want to sing along. I wrote an article about this song last year as I think it is fun without being disrespectful.
