Irish Chain Quilts

Variations To The Quilt Block Irish Chain

Irish Chain Quilts are so intriguing to me. There are a few variations to the basic quilt block that make a dramatic difference in the way the finished quilt looks. One can make a Single Irish Chain Quilt, a double Irish Chain quilt, or a Triple Irish Chain quilt. It just depends on how many colors of fabric you want to use.

I would like to walk you through the basics of making this quilt block and show you how dramatic adding one or two other fabric values can change the entire look of a quilt. Personally I love the double Irish chain quilts the best. The example to the left is of a double chain, notice how it has three colors.

Number of colors determine the name of the variation

on Irish Chain Quilts

If you are planning a Single Irish Chain quilt you will use two colors in your quilt. A light and a dark fabric value which form a single chain. Typically the darker fabric forms the chain effect but you can reverse it if you like.

For a Double Irish Chain Quilt there are three colors used to form two chains. Usually a light fabric, a medium color, and a darker color are used to make these blocks that will be sewn together to create a very interesting pattern. The image to the right shows one of the blocks that would be used to form the chains in the quilt top.

A Triple Irish Chain Quilt has four fabric values or colors. The background fabric is typically a light color. Fabric A will be a medium color fabric. A medium dark fabric (slightly darker than fabric A) for Fabric B. The darkest fabric will be used for Fabric C. Combining the 4 colors in the correct sequence gives the effect of three chains.

The Irish Chain quilt is lovely. I don't quilt, but do admire those of you who do, like you and my daughter-in-law.
