Irish Fiddle--Not Just St Patrick's Day
You'll surely be hearin' some Irish music on March 17. St. Patrick's Day brings Irish music (and the musicians who get to play it) into the mainstream. We all listen to the tunes, tap our toes, and may even start to dancin'. St Patrick's Day is a great starting point to learn about Irish Music, but if you pay attention to the acoustic music scene and folk music you're more likely than ever to hear Irish Music during other parts of the year as well. And if you're hearing Irish music, chances are pretty good that you'll be hearin' a fiddle.
The fiddle is an integral part of traditional Irish music even more than almost any other genre of music. When you're listening to an Irish band, you'll almost always find a fiddle playing!
A Bit o' History
Girald Cambrensis (also known as Gerald of Wales in English or Gerallt Gymro in Welsh) had some interesting observations when he visited Ireland in 1185, "They [the Irish] seem to be incomparably more skilled in [musical instruments] than any other people that I have seen. The movement is . . . rather quick and lively, while at the same time the melody is sweet and pleasant. It is remarkable how, in spite of the great speed of the fingers, the musical proportion is maintained."
Although earlier references to fiddles can be found, it is generally accepted that modern violins and fiddlng came to Ireland some time after its development in the 16th Century. None can dispute that by 1674 the fiddle was well established; Richard Head wrote that in Ireland "in every field a fiddle, and the lasses footing it till they were all of a foam " Initially this would have been the medieval fiddle, but the classical violin was not long in arriving. Although the first performance of Handel's Messiah was in Ireland, a thriving traditional music style was flourishing in the countryside. Airs, jigs, and reels developed, and were well loved by the populace. Although frequently accompanied by pipes, flutes, or other folk instruments, the fiddle frequently played solo.

Truly Irish Fiddling?
You Surely Can't Argue With the Fiddler!
It's no wonder that Irish Fiddlers are so nimble on the strings! Can it be true that it's not the fiddler's fingers that do the dancin' down at the far end of the fiddle, but the tiny feet of a Leprechaun as he nimbly performs his jig? I can't tell you that for certain. But I can tell you Where to Get the Shirt! And just take a look at this Cap!
Irish Fiddle -- Not Just For St. Patrick's Day Anymore!
But March 17 is as Good an Excuse as Any!
And whether you are celebrating Ireland, Irish Heritage, Celtic Music, Leprechauns, or Violins and Fiddles, these shirts are a fun way to do it! They'll almost certainly help you strike up a conversation about your musical passion, and that can't be bad!

The very best way to learn to play a genre of music is to immerse yourself in it. If you are learning Bluegrass, one of the folk festivals that take place across the United States would be a great start. Spending time in a jazz club jamming with the musicians there would set you off on the right foot. For Irish Fiddle, a week at Fiddler's Retreat would be a wonderful way to start! (Or even hone your already existing Irish Fiddle Skills.)
Fiddler's Retreat is the Irish music and culture experience based in Co. Tipperary. Packages are tailor made for individual and large student groups of all ages.

Great News!
If You Can't Afford the Time (or the Gold) to Travel to Ireland...
I received an e-mail from Theresa which was really exciting! It reads, in part, "I am writing to let you know that I am giving Online Fiddle Lessons at Fiddlers Retreat via SKYPE." That means you "can relax and enjoy your lesson in the comfort of your own home!" She assures me that, "We can work on any aspect of your playing, be that a new or old tune, style, ornamentation, bowing etc. We can see how your playing is coming along and I will offer guidance and advice from absolute beginners to professional level players." E-mail her directly info@fiddlersretreat.com for more information. By the way, Theresa has also agreed to do an interview for Violin Student Central. I'll post notice here when we've completed that little project!
Needin' the Notes Written Down, Are Ya?
Mel Bay's Complete Irish Fiddle Player Instructional book and 2 example CDs In his preface, the author reminds the reader that this is not a book for the absolute beginner. Even the experienced player may not "get it" on first reading a given tune, but "You can expect to enjoy the process of learning...[and experience] the joy of recreating a traditional tune, of making it your own."
Irish Fiddle Solos
This collection includes many favourite Irish fiddle tunes. Some are easy to play, others more challenging. The bowing techniques, ornamentation and other aspects of playing style summarized in the introduction will be familiar to readers of Pete's earlier book, the Complete Irish Fiddle Player, as will source musicians like Julia Clifford, Tommy Peoples, Lucy Farr, John Doherty and Padraig O'Keeffe. Here though, instead of proceeding in 'fiddle method' style from simpler to more complex tunes, regional repertoire and styles are explored. Grouped in sets for performance, the tunes from any one tradition can be of varying levels of difficulty.
O'Neill's 1001"
A facsimile edition of Francis O'Neill's classic 1907 collection of jigs, reels, hornpipes and other dance tunes. The Dance Music of Ireland has proved so valuable to musicians and circulated so widely that it has become known simply as 'the book', a virtual bible for many trditional players. Suitable for all melody instruments.

The sooner you start practicing the better you'll be! It may not even be technique you should be working on! When I write this it is mid-June, but I know that I need to do a bunch of memorization work! It's easier to start now and work on songs a little at a time than "cram for final exams" starting March 1. And don't forget that half your off-season marketing is just letting folks know you play!

Aidan O'Neill Plays "Farewell to Ireland"
The True Story of Irish Fiddles, Bows, and Snakes
And if you ask me why,
I'll tell you true, I'll not tell you
That old St. Paddy lie.
They fled from fear, my darlin' son
For all those snakes did know
An Irish fiddler'd snatch him up
If he should break his bow.
And to hear an Irish fiddle play
And never have the chance,
To hear a jig played on four strings
And not be free to dance --
That fate, you see, was horrid
'Twas more than snakes could stand
They left and swam across the sea
And fled fair Ireland.
