I visited Ireland way back in the 1970's, and have gone back several times. Wow, has it changed! Still, it's an amazing place. I stay in touch by collecting fun facts about Ireland - Irish cultural oddities, funny expressions used there, the meaning of "craic" and all sorts of other things that inform life in Ireland even today. Aran sweaters are created with "family weaves," designed to help a drowned fisherman's family identify him when found on the shore.

Amazing book of black and white photographs by an artist who lived with the "Tinkers" as they were once called in the 1960's and truly fell in love with their very unique way of life. There's also a very nice CD of songs by the Travellers included with the book.

The Blackwater Lightship: A Novel

Colm Toibin is an outstanding author, who also wrote another wonderful book called "The Heather Blazing." In "Blackwater Lightship" he writes about a family dealing with the coming death of a young son due to AIDS. What's amazing is the incredible humor and feeling this author finds in this tough situation. Nobody faces the hard knocks of life quite like the Irish!
