The Iron Man 2 Soundtrack Is NOT A Soundtrack

Ranked #9,248 in Music, #251,556 overall

What Do You Think? Is The Iron Man 2 Soundtrack A Soundtrack or Not?

First, let me fill you in on my understanding of the situation (and feel free to correct me if I have any of this wrong.)

The simple facts, as I understand them are that:

AC/DC collaborated with Marvel Stuidos and Columbia Records to create the Iron Man 2 soundtrack.

The Iron Man 2 'soundtrack' contains TWO songs that are heard on the movie and a raft of other songs by AC/DC. Actually, one song appears during the movie and one during the credits. The soundtrack also contains formerly released hit songs and songs that are not as well known. There are no new songs.

Should it really count as a soundtrack or is it a sell out on behalf of AC/DC? A money grab? A marketing ploy?

YOUR TURN!

What do you think? Is the Iron Man 2 soundtrack really a soundtrack or is it a marketing ploy a cop-out of sorts?

Yes, it IS a soundtrack!

No way, Monkeybrain! Soundtracks are full of music from the movie!

kiwisoutback says:

Not a soundtrack. I haven't seen this movie, but I saw the first one. It makes me long for the days when soundtracks used to be a big thing - some really big original songs came from soundtracks in the 80's and 90's. Not anymore.

Susan52 says:

Isn't music from the movie the definition of a soundtrack? Fine to have a "hit" or two to fill time, but I'd be disappointed if I was expecting to hear what I heard when I watched the movie, then didn't.

The Iron Man 2: Original Motion Picture Score [Soundtrack]

This is NOT the AC/DC soundtrack but instead the musical score by John Debney.

Yes, there is an Iron Man 2: Original Motion Picture Score soundtrack available. It is NOT by AC/DC but rather was composed by John Debney and it was just released on July 20, 2010. It represents a totally different listening experience, more true to the movie but realizing that there is a true movie score available makes me think the AC/DC 'soundtrack' really was a cash grab...

Amazon customer Terrance Shaw said that he chose this score for Ivan's Metamorphosis because it is a "beautifully industrial track" and because it sets the theme and he says that John Debney will not leave you disappointed with this CD.

What do you think of the AC/DC Greatest Hits, oops, Iron Man 2 Soundtrack album?

  • kiwisoutback Dec 11, 2010 @ 9:35 pm | delete
It's an AC/DC Greatest Hits album, you're right. This is a big sellout on the behalf of AC/DC, it makes no sense to me. A soundtrack *SHOULD* be a collection of songs from a movie. If those songs are original, even better. But songs not included in the movie? That's just a marketing ploy. I know AC/DC is in the middle of a big comeback, but this is way over the top capitalism - and not very rock and roll either.

If I were to buy a soundtrack from a movie I would expect it to have only music from the movie. Maybe I am being unrealistic?

Interesting debate. I guess all soundtracks aren't created equal.

AC/DC's Iron Man 2 soundtrack should have been called AC/DC's greatest hits. What do you think? Should a soundtrack have music from the movie on it?
