A Classic Iron Man Tale

Demon in a Bottle was first published in 1979 over 9 issues, and originally called The Power of Iron Man. It's gone into re-print in the last few years to satisfy demands by fans old and new to get to see some of the more humanising Iron Man comics.

The Demon in a Bottle arc introduces many new foes - one in particular that newer Iron Man fans will be familiar with, and another one that they might have suspected the existence of. It is one of the most powerful and important stories in defining Iron Man as a character, rather than just another superhero, and necessary reading for any true fan of the Armored Avenger.

Demon in a Bottle also sees some interaction with superheroes who don't get a lot of screen time - notably the Ant-Man and the Submariner. Oh, and Captain America shows up, too.

5 Reasons Demon in a Bottle is Awesome

  • 1Justin Hammer. Honestly, I'm a sucker for villains who aren't afraid to be camper than a row of tents, and Justin has it covered. But he's also terrifying. It's a hard balance to pull off, but he does it with style. Sort of.
  • 2It deals with a real-world issue that non-superheroes have to deal with, and doesn't make it any easier on a superhero than it is on the average person. Especially at the time when this was first published, when alcoholism was little-understood and even less sympathised, Demon in a Bottle did something good in shedding light on it.
  • 3Ant-man. I know, I know, throw rocks if you want. I still love him.
  • 4I love the retro graphics. As much as I appreciate the amount of time, effort and talent that goes into the new digitally rendered stuff, and the realism it brings with it, sometimes I just like to see my old-fashioned comic book graphics again.
  • 5For all I've gone on and on about the humanising and the characterisation here, there is actually a really great storyline as well, along with some awesome new villains (well, they're new if you've been reading in order, anyway. A lot of them are still rare, though).

Read Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle

When an army tank flies through the air to clip the wing of a passenger plane that just happens to be carrying Tony Stark, Iron Man comes out to discover a depth of conspiracy that shocks and surprises even the jaded billionaire, and leads him down a rabbit hole to new enemies and old friends, none of which are particularly pleased with him at the moment.

Tony Stark's Alcoholism

Demon in a Bottle - Tony

It's pretty much impossible to get away from the fact that Tony's battle with alcoholism is an important part of the Demon in a Bottle story arc - as might be obvious from the title.

To some, it may look as though Tony magically deals with it in one issue. That's not, as far as I'm concerned, what's going on here. Tony manages to get around it enough to function and save the day again, but it's not gone - and it shows up again later more than once. It's a running theme that Tony Stark is a troubled man, as can even be seen in the latest Iron Man films.

As is often the case in Iron Man stories, the strength of this one is in the injected dash of realism. Between all the superheroes and villains and suits of flying armor, there's a real person with a real, realistic problem underneath it all. Which is why I think that from a character point of view, Demon in a Bottle is probably the most important story arc. Closely followed by Armor Wars.

nice review of a great book, one of my personal favourites....great choice of pic as well, with Tony staring at the helmet drunk.
