Iron Railway Vineyard - a small London vineyard

Ranked #2,906 in Food & Cooking, #56,912 overall

The Iron Railway Vineyard

The Iron Railway Vineyard is a small South London Vineyard. A small holding with a range of crops, the company produces its own range of ciders and wines.

This is an unofficial lens as part of my series on London's hidden treasures, after their produce was discovered by the cider drinkers in the family!

About the Iron Railway Vineyard

A smallholding in London producing wines and more

A small holding in Merstham, the Iron Railway Vineyard has offices in Coulsdon in South London, UK. It was established by John Dickin in 1983 on part of the old horse drawn railway, and has grown over the years.

A variety of fruit is grown, including apples and grapes. As you would expect, the vineyard produces its own wines. However it also creates and bottles its own cider, sold at farmer's markets and fairs around South London under the name "Sit Down Cider", and a range of apple, wine, and grape juice drinks called "Old Tramway".

Products
Shaden Park Farm Shop acts as an outlet, selling a range of the "Old Tramway" drinks.

While visiting is by appointment only, here are a few shots of the vineyard from Flickr.

Sit Down Cider

The Iron Railway Vineyard's well-known make

Sit Down CiderThe Vineyard contains orchards, and produces a range of cider apples and other fruit. The result is its gorgeous Sit Down Cider, which is very popular locally. They make a range of ciders, including:

  • Sweet
  • Medium
  • Dry
  • Special Reserve
Sold by the litre, most are at 6.5% alcohol by volume although Special Reserve goes higher (about 9.5%)

The image on the left shows the Iron Railway Vineyard's Dry cider.

Old Tramway Wines

White, Sparkling, and Rose from the Iron Railway Vineyard

Old Tramway White WineThe Vineyard also makes a range of wines. White, Sparkling and Rose varieties are all available, although they specialise in dry and medium wines.

Notably, despite bad weather, the Iron Railway Vineyard's 2005 wine won the Medium Dry category for the English Wine Awards. Harpers.co.uk

Although normally only available locally from farmer's markets and a limtied range of distributors, their products are occassionally found online. As I find them I will add them here.

Essentiallywine only delivers within the UK, unfortunately:

Small holdings and producers

As someone who does not drink wine, I was quite surprised to find out that there is a thriving small holders scene producing a range of wines within England.

Made in small quantities (e.g. The Iron Railway's sparkling wine produced in 900 bottles) they are something for the interested wine lover to track down and sample.

I stumbled over the Iron Railway Vineyard while working on the Farthing Downs lens, and thought that it would be an interesting topic to cover (not least because we have cider drinkers in the family!)
